US Tax Payers To Bail Out Foreign Banks
Aloha kakou,
As the Presidential War flares up, I must share some insight on hose who
use Veterans as a shield. While the despise the rational of any war or
conflict, I honor those that went and of course the many that never
returned.
I have always had a wrong feeling about Mr. McCain's adventure as a POW.
For this may I share this article, " McCain and the POW Cover-up" and let
you form your own opinion. One would think a former POW would do
everything to stop wars, torture practices like water-boarding and above
all be instrumental in bringing all POW's back to their homeland whether
alive or in parts.
What scares me more than the likes of McCain and his Cheerleader Sarah is
people serving as advisers on National Security Council, like Kissinger
and Cheney, have been around for the past 40 years.
The author Mr. Schanberg has been reporting on this for quite some time.
Mahalo for your time and concerns for those that have serve, please do not
forget-me-not.

The Shock Doctrine
The Rise of Disaster Capitalism
By Stephen Lendman
Naomi Klein is the author of "The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster
Capitalism" that explodes the myth of "free market" democracy. It shows
how neoliberal Washington Consensus fundamentalism dominates the world
with America its lead exponent exploiting security threats, terror
attacks, economic meltdowns, competing ideologies, tectonic political or
economic shifts, and natural disasters to impose its will everywhere.

U.S. Orgy of Debt
By ERIC MARGOLIS
America has reveled for two decades in an orgy of debt. The U.S. national
debt is now twice its net worth. From Wall Street's "masters of the
universe" financial powerhouses such as Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lynch,
Lehman, and Morgan Stanley, to the humblest homeowners, America's national
motto became "borrow to the hilt and bet."

For The Love Of Money
When Corporations Rule the World
By David C. Korten
Most everyone is aware that we live in an unequal world. Few realize,
however, just how extreme the inequality has become or how fast the gap
between the poor and the super rich is growing. Forbes tells us the world
now has 358 billionaires. Their combined net worth exceeds the combined
net worth of the world's poorest 2½ billion people. This is but one
manifestation of the extreme economic and social distortions created by
the globalized free market economy idealized by business publications such
as Forbes and Business Week.

The New New Deal
We're Footing the Bill and Holding the Bag
By Mike Rivage-Seul
Presently (following the Great Crash of 2008), we're in the midst of yet
another reshuffling and redistribution of cards - another New Deal. But
whereas 30s version shifted money from the haves to the have-nots, the
re-run promises an income redistribution from the disappearing middle
class to the super-rich. They're the gambling addicts who got us here in
the first place. http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article20841.htm

A Note ofAppreciation From the Rich

Society could be intelligently organized to meet the real needs of the
general population. You and others like you could collectively fight to
free yourselves from our domination. But you don't know that. In fact, you
can't even imagine that another way of life is possible. And that's
probably the greatest, most significant achievement of our system --
robbing you of your imagination, your creativity, your ability to think

Propaganda is a Two-Way Street
Iran, Israel and the Looming Threat of War
By Sadegh Kabeer
Iran's relation to Israel is more complicated than it has been widely
portrayed in the mainstream media. It is not one of unremitting hostility
and even amongst hardliners has in the past proven to be tempered by
pragmatic considerations and calculated self-interest. Mashaei's
distinction between the Israel government and the Israeli people attests
to the factional nuances that are so often overlooked by those beating the
drum for military conflict.

The Zionist Plan for the Middle East
Translated and edited by - Israel Shahak
The plan operates on two essential premises. To survive, Israel must 1)
become an imperial regional power, and 2) must effect the division of the
whole area into small states by the dissolution of all existing Arab
states. Small here will depend on the ethnic or sectarian composition of
each state. Consequently, the Zionist hope is that sectarian-based states
become Israel's satellites and, ironically, its source of moral
legitimation. http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article20832.htm

FDA Updates Health Information Advisory on Melamine Contamination: On
September 12, 2008, in light of reports from China of melamine contaminated
infant formula, the FDA issued a Health Information Advisory to proactively
reassure the American public that there is no known threat of contamination
in infant formula manufactured by companies that have met the requirements
to sell such products in the United States. That advisory also warned
members of Chinese communities in the United States that infant formula
manufactured in China, possibly available for purchase at Asian markets,
could pose a risk to infants. The FDA had contacted the companies who
manufacture infant formula for distribution in the United States and
received information from the companies that they are not importing formula
or source materials from China.

There's no defense for e-mail slurs
By Lee Cataluna
Advertiser Columnist
What's worse than a highly paid, high-profile state leader e-mailing dirty
and racist jokes from his official state account?
All the people in similar high places defending his behavior.
HTA's Rex Johnson sure has a lot of friends, especially among local
Democrats. He has a number of people gunning for him too, particularly
among Hawai'i Republicans. So much of the fuss over whether to fire him
for e-mailing offensive material from his state computer is a big tug of
war between opposing parties. It's about him, but it's not just about him.
Really, it should be about the act in question. The heart of a person is
difficult to judge and best left to spouses and clergy. A professional in
his position should be judged by behavior. Racism is not a box you check
on a form, yes or no. Racism is insidious because it has so many forms and
degrees. When the nicest guy you know utters a hateful slur, it's not OK
just because he's your friend. It's still wrong.
Johnson did not author the jokes, but he passed them along. That means
he's unoriginal, but not less culpable. Like they teach middle school
students about cyber-bullying and online trash: "Don't write it, don't
forward it, just delete it."
Lots of people have questionable or offensive or embarrassing things in
their office e-mails. No one would happily welcome a detailed exam of
their e-mail accounts. But just because lots of people forward garbage
like this from work doesn't make it any less wrong. On the contrary, it
makes it all the more awful, particularly when you have state officials
saying, "What's the big deal?"
The big deal is that words can be the sword that cuts, the weight that
crushes, the door that slams when they are used to assault the dignity of
a group of people. The big deal is a leader in a quasi-public office
should be held to the highest standards and should in no way be
perpetrating or rationalizing racism. The big deal is that tourism is
built on the bedrock of "aloha" and there is no aloha in words used to
tear down race or gender.
It should not slip anyone's attention that the HTA board met and made a
decision on Rex Johnson's continued employment without looking at the
actual content of the e-mails in question. They judged the case without
seeing the evidence. How much confidence does that inspire in their
decision-making process? A kid called into the principal's office for
note-passing gets more due process.
Politics and personality aside, the content of those e-mails from a person
holding that position are indefensible.

Hawaii's rents highest in U.S.
CENSUS DATA ALSO SHOW COST OF HOME OWNERSHIP AMONG HIGHEST IN U.S.
By Andrew Gomes
Advertiser Staff Writer
For a third straight year, rental housing costs were higher in Hawai'i
than in any other state last year, according to a new census survey that
also showed the cost of owning a home in Hawai'i was among the highest in
the nation.
Median monthly rent was $1,194 in Hawai'i last year, meaning half of all
renters paid more and half paid less, according to the census estimate.
Only three other states had four-figure median rental rates ^× California
at $1,078, New Jersey at $1,026 and Maryland at $1,000. Nevada ranked
fifth at $980.
Hawai'i's median rent was up $78 from $1,116 a year earlier, and
reflected higher home values passed on to renters as well as new housing
inventory that included upscale condominium tower projects Moana Pacific
and 909 Kapi'olani in Kaka'ako on O'ahu, the state's largest housing
market.
Dorothy Rapoza, a retired typographer on the Big Island planning a move
to O'ahu for work, said she was surprised at how high rents are in
Honolulu.
Rapoza's husband, a banker, recently found a short-term rental in Waikiki
^× a studio with no parking for $1,650 a month ^× to live in until Nov.
1. But Rapoza questions whether she and her husband can find something
more reasonable for a longer term.
'We might not stay because of rents,' she said. 'I really think we'll
come back to the Big Island.'
Home prices are declining this year, but it remains to be seen whether
that will translate into lower rents. Median sale prices of previously
owned single-family homes are down statewide this year through August,
including a 2.8 percent decline on O'ahu. But median prices for condos
statewide are up, including a 1.5 percent rise on O'ahu.
The last time Hawai'i's median rent wasn't the highest in the country was
in 2005, when median rent was $871 and third most costly behind
California and New Jersey.
Last year's rise in rent resulted in more Hawai'i renters paying a higher
percentage of their income for housing. The census report said 39.1
percent of renters last year paid 35 percent or more of their household
income on rent, up from 37.9 percent of renters a year earlier.
For homeowners, the cost of housing was still high compared with other
states, but owner-occupants usually paid a smaller percentage of their
income for housing compared with renters.
The census report said 25.1 percent of people who live in their house and
make mortgage payments pay 35 percent or more of their household income
for their home. Some 18.7 percent of homeowners pay less than 20 percent
of their income for their home, in part because many have owned their
property for decades and have relatively small mortgage payments.
According to the report, about 7 percent of homeowners pay less than
$1,000 a month to own their home. Another 36 percent pay $2,000 or more.
The median monthly cost to own a home in Hawai'i for owner-occupants with
a mortgage was $2,099 last year, up $140 from $1,959 a year earlier.
Only two states had higher ownership costs ^× California at $2,314 and
New Jersey at $2,278. In 2006, Hawai'i ranked fourth most expensive
behind the same two states and Massachusetts.
According to the survey, the median value of owner-occupied homes was
$555,400 last year, the highest in the nation and up from $529,700 a year
earlier. Home values are estimates reported by occupants, and include
single-family homes and condos.
Because the census housing data are based on survey results, all figures
are estimates. The margin of error is typically under 2 percent.

Subject: An open letter to Sarah Palin:
"Decisions that have been made for the last couple of centuries have been
decisions made without the presence of a real God....from the vision, not
of God, but of money." --Tom P., MOHAWK elder
An open letter to Sarah Palin:
Daughter of the Earth ~
I speak from the heart of my indigenous grandmothers. I want to share my
concern with and for you, your family, and our country. We have only three
choices in our lives ~ to act from Love; to act from Fear, or not to act
at all.
The day you were chosen to be John McCain's running mate, I decided to
find out who you are. I looked up your voting record at
http://www.ontheissues.org/Sarah_Palin_VoteMatch.htm
I read your voting record, and my heart plummeted into a well of deep
grief. We have the opportunity to co-create a reality that respects all
people and belief systems; all living beings; to explore and use
alternative energies that will not harm the earth; to feed all the peoples
of the earth; to address an economic system that is not and has not worked
for many years. I would hope that you, and all our government officials,
would be looking for ways to accomplish these things.
Yet, you are suing the U.S. government to open the Arctic National
Wildlife Refuge for Big Oil. And you are backing a senseless and hopeless
war that is being fought only to gain more oil.
Jesus, your teacher and saviour, taught peace, harmony, balance and
unconditional love for all. When you proclaim Christianity, what I hear is
a need to dominate the Earth and All Our Relations out of fear, greed, and
avarice - the 'business as usual' mentality which has so harmed us all in
the last eight years (to say nothing of the centuries before).
When you say "the war in Iraq is a task sent from God", I question your
authority to speak for the Creator, and I hear the same kind of mentality
that guided Adolph Hitler (April 12, 1922), who said, "My feeling as a
Christian points me to my Lord and Saviour as a Fighter. It points me to
the man who, once in loneliness, surrounded only by a few followers,
recognized these Jews (substitute: Muslim, Native American, Asian,
non-Christian) for what they were and summoned men to the fight against
them and who, God's turth! was greatest not as sufferer but as fighter. In
boundless love as a Christian and as a man I read through the passage
which tells us how the Lord at last rose in His might and seized the
scourge to drive out of the Temple the brood of vipers and of adders. How
terrific was His fight for the world against the Jewish (Muslim, Black,
Indian, Hispanic, Asian, non-Christian fundamentalist) poison. Today,
after two thousand years, with deepest emotion I recognize more profoundly
than ever before - the fact that it was for this that He had to shed His
blood upon the Cross. As a Christian I have no duty to allow myself to be
cheated, but I have the duty to be a fighter for truth and justice. And as
a man I have the duty to see to it that human society does not suffer the
same catastrophic collapse as did the civilization of the ancient world
some two thousand years ago - a civilization which was driven to its ruin
through this same Jewish (Muslim, Black, Indian, Hispanic, Asian,
non-Christian fundamentalist) people. "
And, when you proclaim the Iraq war 'a task from God', I hear the same
misguided belief systems of the fanatical Muslim sects that proclaim
'jihad', a 'holy war'. HOLY and War do not belong in the same sentence - a
'holy war' is an oxymoron promoted by fanatical bigots who believe only in
their own supremacy. I cannot condone such beliefs, and, unless you want
to take us back into the dark ages of the Inquisition and the Crusades, I
pray that you will look at your own beliefs.
You claim that "We are about to win the war in Iraq". I question where you
got your information. When Bill Clinton left office, we were at -0-
national debt - now we are trillions of dollars in debt. . . and no end in
sight. To say nothing of the thousands of lives lost on both sides, due to
Big Oil's need to perpetuate itself. This is not a 'holy war' . . . it is
a war of greed. John McCain brought up his experience in Vietnam - one
more war fought for the wrong reasons. You're too young to remember, but
many of us do remember. Have we learned nothing in the last forty years??
As I read your opinions and the actions you have taken in your short term
as governor, I am shocked and apalled, and my heart hurts.
You are a mother and grandmother-to-be, yet you are against abortion
under any circumstance. Apparently, you'd rather see children all over
the world starve to death within a few months of birth because their
parents can't afford to feed them, or a mother who beats or throws a
child into the garbage because all she can see is the face of the man who
raped her.
You don't want any gun control, even though children the ages of yours
are killing each other in cities all over the U.S. because guns are so
easily accessible to them. Sarah, what if it was one of your children
killed by one of those children with guns? Would you still say, "Guns
don't kill people - only people kill people?"
When I listened to your speeches, I don't hear one possible solution to
the oil crisis; the war in Iraq; the economic crisis facing our nation. I
don't hear anything about better schools, or healthcare for all, or ways
to balance the national debt. I hear ego and arrogance from you; white
supremacy backed by fanatical fundamentalist beliefs; the competitive
need to slam the opponent so you can 'win' above all else. I do not
appreciate the Republican's "Perception Management" team 'spinning' lies
into 'truths' for the gullible American publics' consumption.
My question to you, Sarah, is where is your heart? Where is
your compassion, mercy, and the desire to uplift all humanity? Where is
your respect for people of other cultures, religions, races? Where is
your desire to find true answers to all the challenges our nation is
facing at this present moment? You bandy the word 'change' around, but I
haven't heard one real word about what you intend to do. At some point,
if your voting record doesn't change, indigenous people around the world
may start calling you "Daughter-who-rapes-the-earth".
As I looked at the crowd at the GOP convention, I noticed very few people
of color. Your husband comes from indigenous peoples. In some secret
place, his heart must be full of tears and terror.
People of Color - First Peoples, African Americans, Asian Americans,
Hispanic Americans - I call on you to look beneath the rhetoric. See the
flim-flam of sympathy and self-righteous white supremacist, racist,
fanatical religionist 'patriotism'. Understand that NONE of the true
issues are being addressed, because McCain/Palin have no answers!! Call
for an honest vote count - no "lost" ballots; no "mis-counts". . . we all
suspected the last election was bogus - it's time to make sure we have a
real election now.
My prayer for you, Sarah, is that you learn the true meaning of Love,
Service, Humility, Compassion and Mercy. I pray that through this heart
opening, you will begin to feel the grief of the world, and all our
ancestors. I pray that feeling this pain will level you to the ground,
and make it possible for you to examine every belief you've ever held and
discard those that do not serve Truth and Love.
And my prayer for my country is that you aren't allowed to 'win' this
election. At this time, we need leaders who are open to a new way of
viewing the world; leaders who are willing to stop greed and corporate
corruption; leaders who will co-create balance and harmony with all. We
are moving toward an enlightened age - God willing, we will not fall back
into the Dark Ages.
Perhaps, Sarah, in another ten years, if your heart opens and you come to
understand a larger picture than the narrow-minded bigotry you presently
sustain, you would be a good Servant of the People. In the meantime, the
heart of the indigenous peoples will pray for that opening and pray that
our country is saved from you and your current belief system.
In love and blessing
An Indigenous Woman

Te Pakeha tahae
Kia Ora whanau
As a descendant of this woman warrior I am not happy with the shitament,
Piipi was right .
"Piipi Raumati Tiopira, also called Phoebe, was born at Waihou, Hokianga,
probably sometime between 1857 and 1862, the youngest of five children of
Te Roroa leader Tiopira Kinaki (also known as Tiopira Te Rurunga, Tiopira
Rehi and Tiopira Taoho) and his wife, Marara Mahuhu. Her hapu were Ngati
Rangi and Te Roroa of Te Roroa, Ngati Pakau and Ngai Tu of Nga Puhi, and
Ngati Rongo of Ngati Whatua. A descendant of famous rangatira, she was the
great-granddaughter of Te Roroa paramount chief, warrior-poet and seer
Taoho, and his warrior cousin Tuohu. Her grandfathers were Te Waenga,
tohunga of Hokianga Heads, and Te Rurunga. Her paternal great-uncles were
the war leaders Tuwhare and Maratea, the slayer of Hongi Hika.
"A woman of mana, great determination and forceful character, Piipi
Cummins died at Waipoua on 9 August 1952 embittered by `Te Pakeha tahae'
(the thieving Pakeha) and the repeated failures of governments to provide
redress for her people. Although unsuccessful in recovering Te Roroa
treasured burial ground, Piipi kept alive, for future generations, her
ancestors' continued haunting cries for justice. She is buried at Pahinui,
Waipoua"

Iwi expects $9 million
Treaty settlement likely soon
Dargaville News | Wednesday, 24 September 2008
http://www.stuff.co.nz/northland/4702706a1927.html
The longest running treaty negotiation to date involving Waipoua iwi Te
Roroa is likely to be settled this week.
The government is to make Te Roroa an offer of $6 million which will
offset costs of purchasing the properties, according to a leading Labour
Party spokesman.
Labour Tai Tokerau candidate Kelvin Davis says the settlement means Te
Roroa will not need to borrow to buy deferred selection properties.
Negotiations between the Crown and Te Roroa took 13 years before a
deed of settlement was signed in 2005.
Support for the settlement legislation had been delayed because of
concerns over Te Roroa's ability to buy some properties without
incurring a debt, and the return of the sacred sites of Kaharau, Te
Tararaire and Kohekohe taonga.
The settlement package contains a formal Crown apology, cultural
redress including the transfer of 24 areas of Crown-owned land of
special significance to Te Roroa, and a $9m combination of Crown-owned
land and cash.
"It is good that Te Roroa will finally get redress with the return of
their lands to them," says Mr Davis. "It will help iwi in the healing
process and allow them to progress into the future.
"This settlement lays down the foundations for Te Roroa to make secure
economic gains going forward which is long overdue," he says.
"I am pleased that the Crown has acted to settle this claim after such
a long time, and I am especially pleased for Te Roroa who have had to
work extremely hard for this settlement."
Te Roroa Whatu Ora Trust Board chairman Alex Nathan says getting to
this point is good and will allow iwi to begin stages of economic and
social development for the benefit of all its people.
Mr Nathan says the claim area, which includes two small sections in
Dargaville township, only involves Crown-leased land and will not
involve any private land.
A spokesperson for Minister of Treaty Negotiations Michael Cullen's
office says the third and final reading would be happening this week
and the legislation was expected to get broad parliamentary support.

Subject: NobelPrize4Pete News!
Newsletter from Committee to Nominate Pete Seeger for the Nobel Peace
Prize.
Vol. I, No. I, September 2008
Dear Friends:
Thanks for your help in the grassroots effort to get the Nobel Peace Prize
for Pete Seeger. This is our first newsletter. As we promised, we have
not bothered you with emails or given your name to other causes, no matter
how worthy. So far news has spread by word of mouth and emails among
friends and between organizations. Please check out our new web site
http://www.nobelprize4pete.org and use the resources, pictures, sponsors
and stories to help promote this campaign. You can also sign the petition
by clicking on the "Sign the Petition" link. Who would have thought when I
started this petition just about one year ago that it would have been so
heartily supported?
By this time you probably want to hear news of the progress of this
campaign. The bad news is that our petition was off line due to some sort
of "technical difficulties" for almost a month, and I'm sure we lost some
signers and confused many people. The good news is that it is up again and
has nearly twenty thousand (20,000) signatures!
Now we need your help. Our most urgent goal is to get Pete nominated
before February 2009, the Nobel committee's deadline. Do you know anyone
who works at an organization that might be officially able to nominate
Pete? In order to do this, we urgently need help finding a person or
agency that will pledge to nominate him. The American Friends Service
Committee was interested but gave us no assurance that they would present
his name. Qualified nominators include some elected representatives,
university professors, and previous Nobel Peace Prizewinners. Please help
us find a nominator! Spreading the word is critical.
BREAKING NEWS: Representative Barbara Lee's office has agreed to consider
our recommendations to nominate Pete. Please call and write Maha
mahaibrahim@mail.house.gov, 1301 Clay St., Suite 1000-N, Oakland, CA
94612; 510763-0370 or 202-225-2661.
This campaign is not about making an icon of Pete Seeger, it is
significant on a much larger scale: 1) Pete is a life-long activist for
peace and social justice, someone we can strive to emulate; 2) As a
cultural worker, he exemplifies the under-represented strata of the arts,
showing that the arts can be more than a medium of entertainment but one
of enlightenment, compassion, participation and joy; 3) This is the first
time a candidate has been chosen and supported by a grassroots movement,
we are taking charge of our own history, heroes and heroines. Those who
tell their stories on the petition convey a feeling of family warmth.
They are grateful they have a chance to say thank you to Pete during his
lifetime, just as many of us wish we had had with our own fathers. They
repeat Pete's one-liners just like uncle Joe's old jokes, such as his
saying that "not everybody can talk at the same time but everybody can
sing at the same time." He never did a concert or demonstration without
teaching everybody to sing, and in harmony! "My voice is shot now," he
says, "but I don't have to sing anymore; I just wave my banjo neck at the
audience and they do the singing."
People have asked why I feel so passionately about proposing Pete for
this international accolade. I refer to another aphorism of Pete's when
he speaks about what he calls the "teaspoon brigade." Working for peace,
he says, is like adding sand to a basket on one side of a giant scale,
trying to tip it our way despite enormous weight on the opposite side;
but if we get enough people adding sand with teaspoons, even if everybody
else is laughing at us, we can tip the scales. This is my teaspoonful!
Now we need everybody's help to make this nomination a reality.

Hooray for Toshi!
[pete-toshi.jpg] Hooray for Toshi! If it hadn't been for Pete's wife,
Toshi, Pete would not be here now. I remember when, after concerts,
everybody wanted a piece of Pete. "There is a party at my house, come on
over Pete!" "We're going home Peter," said Toshi. Because artists have
always paid a price for popularity and often been used up by so many fans
who seek to appropriate their fame, Toshi refused to let Pete be used up.
Toshi raised the children and kept a rural house going when Pete was on
the road most of the time. The media blacklisted him because he refused
to cooperate with the inquisition of the House Un-American Activities
Committee. His performances were constrained to youngsters in schools,
colleges, and summer camps. They had thrown B'rer Rabbit in the Briar
Patch!
One story goes that when Toshi was congratulated for the work Pete did,
she said, "That's Pete's work, I'm a potter." Toshi quips, "If Pete
chased women like he chases causes I'd have an excuse to leave him."
Pete acknowledges the support that Toshi gave him. He is also more aware
of the role women play in a just world: "I believe that women working
with children will get men to wake up to what a foolish thing it is to
seek power and glory and money in their lives."
Let's give credit where it's due, the NOBLE prize goes to Toshi.
(Eleanor Walden inserted all anecdotal statements and will take blame or
credit for any or all of them.)
