Yes! The US and Americans of Hawaiian Ancestry will not stop
themselves from brainwashing, stealing, oppressing, and
enslaving the Hawaiian People. That I am most certain of.
Are we to keep ourselves in denial or apathy?
We sure aint ignorant anymore!
Human nature...cause & effect...inescapable.

Gay & Robinson to end sugar production
Pacific Business News (Honolulu) - by Jim Kelly
Gay & Robinson is getting out of the sugar business after 116 years on
Kauai.
The private, family-owned company told workers at the start of their
shift on Wednesday that it is ending the growing and processing of sugar
as a food commodity but plans to move ahead with growing crops for the
production of ethanol.
The company didn't give a timetable for ending sugar production.
The shutdown of the sugar operation leaves only one remaining sugar
plantation and mill in Hawaii, Alexander & Baldwin's Hawaii Commercial
and Sugar Co. on Maui.
Gay & Robinson, which has vast agricultural land holdings on the west
side of Kauai, said it plans to lease some of its fields to "various
agricultural entities." The company said it will lease its Kaumakani
mill, terminal and other assets to pacific West Energy LLC, with which it
has partnered to develop an ethanol production plant.
The plans have been delayed by difficulties in finding financing for the
project and a glut of proposed ethanol projects on the Mainland that are
also trying to attract investors.
The company also said it plans to install an additional hydroelectric
generator to add 5 to 10 megawatts of power to the Kauai electric grid.
Gay & Robinson is Kauai's ninth largest employer with 235 workers, many
of whom are represented by ILWU Local 142. The company said "it will
continue to honor its contractual obligations to its workers, including
current employees as well as retirees" but didn't say if it planned to
eliminate any jobs.
Sugar dominated Hawaii's economy for more than a century after the first
plantation opened on Kauai in 1835.
Hawaii sugar production peaked in 1968 and began a long decline as the
costs of land, labor and transportation combined to cut profits and make
Hawaii sugar more expensive than foreign competitors.

-----
Dear Friends, I have written about my encounter with McCain and his family
in 1999 -- please feel free to share my story with whomever you think
might be considering voting for him. Ana
MY HOLIDAY WITH JOHN McCAIN
It was just before John McCain^Òs last run at the presidential nomination
in 2000 that my husband and I vacationed in Turtle Island in Fiji with
John McCain, Cindy, and their children, including Bridget (their adopted
Bangladeshi child).
It was not our intention, but it was our misfortune to be in close
quarters with John McCain for almost a week since Turtle Island has a
small number of bungalows and their focus on communal meals force all
vacationers who are there at the same time to get to know each other
intimately.
He arrived at our first group meal and started reading quotes from a pile
of William Faulkner books with a forest of Post-Its sticking out of them.
As an English Literature major myself, my first thought was ^Óif he likes
this so much, why hasn^Òt he memorized any of this yet?^Ô I soon
realized that McCain actually thought we had come on vacation to be a
volunteer audience for his ^Óreadings^Ô which then became a regular part
of each meal. Out of politeness, none of the vacationers initially
protested at this intrusion into their blissful holiday, but people^Òs
buttons definitely got pushed as the readings continued day after day.
Unfortunately this was not his only contribution to our mealtime
entertainment. He waxed on during one meal about how Indo-Chine women
had the best figures and that our American corn-fed women just couldn^Òt
meet up to this standard. He also made it a point that all of us should
stop Cindy from having dessert as her weight was too high and made a few
comments to Amy, the 25 year old wife of the honeymooning couple from
Nebraska that she should eat less as she needed to lose weight.
McCain^Òs appreciation of the beauty of Asian women was so great that
David the American economist had to move his Thai wife to the other side
of the table from McCain as McCain kept aggressively flirting with and
touching her.
Needless to say I was irritated at his large ego, and his rude behavior
towards his wife and other women, but decided he must have some redeeming
qualities as he had adopted a handicapped child from Bangladesh. I asked
him about this one day and his response was shocking ^Ö^ÓOh, that was
Cindy^Òs idea ^Ö I didn^Òt have anything to do with it. She just went
and adopted this thing without even asking me. You can^Òt imagine how
people stare when I wheel this ugly, black thing around in a shopping
cart in Arizona. No, it wasn^Òt my idea at all.^Ô
I actively avoided McCain after that, but unfortunately one day he
engaged me in a political discussion which soon got us on the topic of
the active US bombing of Iraq at that time. I was shocked when he said
^Óif I was in charge, I would nuke Iraq to teach them a lesson^Ô. Given
McCain^Òs personal experience with the horrors of war I had expected a
more balanced point of view. I commented on the tragic consequences of
the nuclear attacks on Japan during WWII ^Ö but no, he was not to be
dissuaded. He went on to say that if it was up to him he would have
dropped many more nuclear bombs on Japan. I rapidly extricated myself
from this conversation as I could tell that his experience being tortured
as a POW didn^Òt seem to have mellowed out his perspective but rather had
made him more aggressive, and vengeful towards the world.
My final encounter with McCain was on the morning that he was leaving
Turtle Island. Amy and I were happily eating pancakes when McCain
arrived and told Amy that she shouldn^Òt be having pancakes because she
needed to lose weight. Amy burst into tears at this abusive comment. I
felt fiercely protective of Amy and immediately turned to McCain and told
him to leave her alone. He became very angry and abusive towards me, and
said ^Ódon^Òt you know who I am^Ô and I looked him in the face and said
^Óyes, you are the biggest asshole I have ever met^Ô and headed back to
my cabin. I am happy to say that later that day when I arrived at lunch
I was given a standing ovation by all the guests for having stood up to
McCain^Òs bullying.
Although I have shared my McCain story informally with friends, this is
the first time I am making this public. I almost did so in 2000, when
McCain first announced his bid for the Republican nomination but it soon
became apparent that George Bush was the shoo-in candidate and so I did
not act then. However, now that there is a very real possibility that
McCain could be elected as our next president, I feel it is my duty as an
American citizen to share this story. I can^Òt imagine a more scary
outcome for America than that this abusive, aggressive man should lead
our nation. I have observed him in intimate surroundings as he really
is, not how the media portrays him to be. If his attitudes toward women,
and his treatment of his own family are even a small indicator of his
real personality, then I shudder to think what will happen to America
were he to be elected as our President.

" Mark Twain - The War Prayer -

The War Prayer
BY MARK TWAIN
It was a time of great and exalting excitement. The country was up in
arms, the war was on, in every breast burned the holy fire of patriotism;
the drums were beating, the bands playing, the toy pistols popping, the
bunched firecrackers hissing and spluttering; on every hand and far down
the receding and fading spread of roofs and balconies a fluttering
wilderness of flags flashed in the sun; daily the young volunteers marched
down the wide avenue gay and fine in their new uniforms, the proud fathers
and mothers and sisters and sweethearts cheering them with voices choked
with happy emotion as they swung by; nightly the packed mass meetings
listened, panting, to patriot oratory which stirred the deepest deeps of
their hearts, and which they interrupted at briefest intervals with
cyclones of applause, the tears running down their cheeks the while; in
the churches the pastors preached devotion to flag and country, and
invoked the God of Battles beseeching His aid in our good cause in
outpourings of fervid eloquence which moved every listener. It was indeed
a glad and gracious time, and the half dozen rash spirits that ventured to
disapprove of the war and cast a doubt upon its righteousness straightway
got such a stern and angry warning that for their personal safety's sake
they quickly shrank out of sight and offended no more in that way.
Sunday morning came -- next day the battalions would leave for the front;
the church was filled; the volunteers were there, their young faces alight
with martial dreams -- visions of the stern advance, the gathering
momentum, the rushing charge, the flashing sabers, the flight of the foe,
the tumult, the enveloping smoke, the fierce pursuit, the surrender! Then
home from the war, bronzed heroes, welcomed, adored, submerged in golden
seas of glory! With the volunteers sat their dear ones, proud, happy, and
envied by the neighbors and friends who had no sons and brothers to send
forth to the field of honor, there to win for the flag, or, failing, die
the noblest of noble deaths. The service proceeded; a war chapter from the
Old Testament was read; the first prayer was said; it was followed by an
organ burst that shook the building, and with one impulse the house rose,
with glowing eyes and beating hearts, and poured out that tremendous
invocation
*God the all-terrible! Thou who ordainest! Thunder thy
clarion and lightning thy sword!*
Then came the "long" prayer. None could remember the like of it for
passionate pleading and moving and beautiful language. The burden of its
supplication was, that an ever-merciful and benignant Father of us all
would watch over our noble young soldiers, and aid, comfort, and
encourage them in their patriotic work; bless them, shield them in the
day of battle and the hour of peril, bear them in His mighty hand, make
them strong and confident, invincible in the bloody onset; help them to
crush the foe, grant to them and to their flag and country imperishable
honor and glory --
An aged stranger entered and moved with slow and noiseless step up the
main aisle, his eyes fixed upon the minister, his long body clothed in a
robe that reached to his feet, his head bare, his white hair descending
in a frothy cataract to his shoulders, his seamy face unnaturally pale,
pale even to ghastliness. With all eyes following him and wondering, he
made his silent way; without pausing, he ascended to the preacher's side
and stood there waiting. With shut lids the preacher, unconscious of his
presence, continued with his moving prayer, and at last finished it with
the words, uttered in fervent appeal, "Bless our arms, grant us the
victory, O Lord our God, Father and Protector of our land and flag!"
The stranger touched his arm, motioned him to step aside -- which the
startled minister did -- and took his place. During some moments he
surveyed the spellbound audience with solemn eyes, in which burned an
uncanny light; then in a deep voice he said:
"I come from the Throne -- bearing a message from Almighty God!" The
words smote the house with a shock; if the stranger perceived it he gave
no attention. "He has heard the prayer of His servant your shepherd, and
will grant it if such shall be your desire after I, His messenger, shall
have explained to you its import -- that is to say, its full import. For
it is like unto many of the prayers of men, in that it asks for more than
he who utters it is aware of -- except he pause and think.
"God's servant and yours has prayed his prayer. Has he paused and taken
thought? Is it one prayer? No, it is two -- one uttered, the other not.
Both have reached the ear of Him Who heareth all supplications, the
spoken and the unspoken. Ponder this -- keep it in mind. If you would
beseech a blessing upon yourself, beware! lest without intent you invoke
a curse upon a neighbor at the same time. If you pray for the blessing of
rain upon your crop which needs it, by that act you are possibly praying
for a curse upon some neighbor's crop which may not need rain and can be
injured by it.
"You have heard your servant's prayer -- the uttered part of it. I am
commissioned of God to put into words the other part of it -- that part
which the pastor -- and also you in your hearts -- fervently prayed
silently. And ignorantly and unthinkingly? God grant that it was so! You
heard these words: 'Grant us the victory, O Lord our God!' That is
sufficient. the *whole* of the uttered prayer is compact into those
pregnant words. Elaborations were not necessary. When you have prayed for
victory you have prayed for many unmentioned results which follow
victory--*must* follow it, cannot help but follow it. Upon the listening
spirit of God fell also the unspoken part of the prayer. He commandeth me
to put it into words. Listen!
"O Lord our Father, our young patriots, idols of our hearts, go forth to
battle -- be Thou near them! With them -- in spirit -- we also go forth
from the sweet peace of our beloved firesides to smite the foe. O Lord
our God, help us to tear their soldiers to bloody shreds with our shells;
help us to cover their smiling fields with the pale forms of their
patriot dead; help us to drown the thunder of the guns with the shrieks
of their wounded, writhing in pain; help us to lay waste their humble
homes with a hurricane of fire; help us to wring the hearts of their
unoffending widows with unavailing grief; help us to turn them out
roofless with little children to wander unfriended the wastes of their
desolated land in rags and hunger and thirst, sports of the sun flames of
summer and the icy winds of winter, broken in spirit, worn with travail,
imploring Thee for the refuge of the grave and denied it -- for our sakes
who adore Thee, Lord, blast their hopes, blight their lives, protract
their bitter pilgrimage, make heavy their steps, water their way with
their tears, stain the white snow with the blood of their wounded feet!
We ask it, in the spirit of love, of Him Who is the Source of Love, and
Who is the ever-faithful refuge and friend of all that are sore beset and
seek His aid with humble and contrite hearts. Amen.
(*After a pause.*) "Ye have prayed it; if ye still desire it, speak! The
messenger of the Most High waits!"
It was believed afterward that the man was a lunatic, because there was
no sense in what he said.

public college with a Masters in Teaching program dedicated to social

Interior employees accused in sex, gift scandal
By DINA CAPPIELLO, Associated Press Writer
Wednesday, September 10, 2008
(09-10) 18:16 PDT WASHINGTON (AP) --
Government brokers responsible for collecting billions of dollars in
federal oil royalties operated in a "culture of substance abuse and
promiscuity" that included having sex with energy company employees,
accepting lavish gifts and rigging contracts to favored firms,
investigators said Wednesday.
The alleged transgressions involve 13 former and current Interior
Department employees in Denver and Washington. Their alleged improprieties
include influencing contracts, working part-time as private oil
consultants and having sexual relationships with - and accepting golf and
ski trips, snowboarding lessons and concert tickets from - oil company
employees, according to three reports released Wednesday by the Interior
Department's inspector general.
The investigations expose a small group of individuals "wholly lacking in
acceptance of or adherence to government ethical standards," wrote
Inspector General Earl E. Devaney, whose office spent more than two years
and $5.3 million on the investigation.
"Sexual relationships with prohibited sources cannot, by definition, be
arms-length," Devaney said.
The reports describe a fraternity house atmosphere inside the Denver
Minerals Management Service office responsible for marketing oil and
natural gas that energy companies barter to the government in lieu of cash
royalty payments for drilling on federal lands. The government received
$4.3 billion in such royalty-in-kind payments last year. The oil and gas
is then resold to energy companies or put in the nation's emergency
stockpile.
"During the course of our investigation, we learned that some RIK
employees frequently consumed alcohol at industry functions, had used
cocaine and marijuana, and had sexual relationships with oil and gas
company representatives," the report said. Two government employees who
had to spend the night after a daytime industry function because they were
too intoxicated to drive home were commonly referred to by energy traders
as the "MMS Chicks."
Between 2002 and 2006, 19 oil marketers - nearly a third of the 55-person
staff in the Denver office - received gifts and gratuities from oil and
gas companies, including Chevron Corp., Shell, Hess Corp. and Denver-based
Gary-Williams Energy Corp., the investigators found. The investigation
focuses on nine employees - all but one of whom received ethics training -
who attended meals, parties, paintball games and concerts whose value
exceeded the $20-per-gift limit or $50-a-year thresholds on outside gifts.
In the case of two marketers, gifts were accepted on at least 135
occasions. The report identifies eight of the employees by name and a
ninth only by job description.
One worker admitted having a one-night-stand with a Shell employee. That
same individual allegedly passed out business cards for her sex toy
business, Passion Parties Inc., at work, and bragged that her income from
that business exceeded her salary at the Interior Department. The
employee was authorized to conduct such outside employment, and denied to
investigators that she advertised for it during work hours, the report
said. She admitted selling products to several of her subordinates.
Devaney said the investigations took so long because Chevron refused to
cooperate. An Interior Department official said Chevron would not allow
investigators to interview its employees.
Don Campbell, a Chevron spokesman, said Wednesday that the company
"produced all of the documents that the government requested months ago."
A Shell spokeswoman said it would be premature for the company to comment
on the report until it had time to review it.
Maripat Sexton, a spokeswoman for Hess Corp., said the company's
investigations "indicated no wrongdoing on our employee's part."
"We do not believe we are the focus of the investigation," she said.
One of the reports claims that the former head of the Denver
royalty-in-kind office, Gregory W. Smith, purchased cocaine from a
co-worker, and one occasion had it delivered to the office. He also
allegedly had oral sex with subordinates. The report also said Smith
steered government contracts to Geomatrix Consultants Inc. and used
government databases and e-mail accounts to conduct business for the
company, which paid him $30,000 for his work from April 2002 through June
2003. Smith retired from the office in May 2007.
Smith's attorney, Steve Peters, called the claims "sheer fantasy."
"Greg Smith was a loyal, dedicated employee of the federal government for
more than 28 years," Peters said Wednesday. "His efforts in running the
royalty-in-kind program resulted in one of the most profitable government
programs in American history."
MMS Director Randall Luthi, in an interview, said the agency was taking
the report "extremely seriously" and would review the allegations and
weigh taking appropriate action in coming months. Luthi said four of the
employees were transferred to other departments last year. The inspector
general is recommending that current employees implicated be fired and be
barred for life from working within the royalty program.
House Natural Resources Chairman Nick Rahall, D-W.Va., said "this whole
IG report reads like a script from a television miniseries and one that
cannot air during family viewing time. It is no wonder that the office
was doing such a lousy job of overseeing the RIK program; clearly the
employees had 'other' priorities in that office."
One of the employees named in the investigation, Jimmy Mayberry, already
has pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Washington to violations of
conflict-of-interest laws. The Justice Department declined to prosecute
Smith and former Associate Director of the Minerals Revenue Management
program Lucy Querques Denett, who the report says manipulated contracts
to ensure they were awarded to former Interior employees.
The findings are the latest sign of trouble at the Minerals Management
Service, which already has been accused of mismanaging the collection of
fees from oil companies and writing faulty contracts for drilling on
government land and offshore. The charges also come as Congress and both
presidential candidates are debating whether to open up more federal
offshore waters to oil and natural gas drilling.
"This all shows the oil industry holds shocking sway over the
administration and even key federal employees," said Sen. Bill Nelson,
D-Fla. "This is why we must not allow Big Oil's agenda to be jammed
through Congress."
Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., urged Democrats to reopen a House
investigation of the Minerals Management Service that was initiated in
2006 by House Republicans. "Looking into and fixing these problems would
have meant highlighting the enormous revenues that domestic oil and
natural gas production contributes to our treasury. This just didn't fit
into their anti-drilling campaign," he said.
Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., chairman of the House Oversight and
Government Reform Committee, announced late Wednesday that he would hold
a hearing on the investigations next week.
While most government royalties for drilling on federal lands are paid in
cash, the government in recent years has been receiving a greater share
of its oil and gas royalties in the actual product. More of that oil is
also being sold on the open market, versus being deposited in the
Strategic Petroleum Reserve, the nation's emergency oil stockpile.
Congress earlier this year passed a law halting deposits of oil to the
reserve to help alleviate high gasoline prices.
The investigation was prompted by a 2006 phone call from an employee in
the Denver office who reported ethical lapses.

Steady Decline in US Dominance Predicted by
US Intelligence top analyst
perhaps then we need to concentrate on restoring our water, land, food and
our schools back into the hands of communities and out of the hands of
corporations. and on increasing the transparency and honesty of
governance. that may be the only place we can make a difference for the
future. by becoming a nation that doesn't require us to "compete" for the
resources of other countries.

Reduced Dominance Is Predicted for U.S.
Analyst Previews Report to Next President
By Joby Warrick and Walter Pincus
Washington Post Staff Writers
Wednesday, September 10, 2008; A02
An intelligence forecast being prepared for the next president on
future global risks envisions a steady decline in U.S. dominance in
the coming decades, as the world is reshaped by globalization,
battered by climate change, and destabilized by regional upheavals
over shortages of food, water and energy.
The report, previewed in a speech by Thomas Fingar, the U.S.
intelligence community's top analyst, also concludes that the one
key area of continued U.S. superiority -- military power -- will
"be the least significant" asset in the increasingly competitive
world of the future, because "nobody is going to attack us with
massive conventional force."
Fingar's remarks last week were based on a partially completed
"Global Trends 2025" report that assesses how international events
could affect the United States in the next 15 to 17 years. Speaking
at a conference of intelligence professionals in Orlando, Fingar
gave an overview of key findings that he said will be presented to
the next occupant of the White House early in the new year.
"The U.S. will remain the preeminent power, but that American
dominance will be much diminished," Fingar said, according to a
transcript of the Thursday speech. He saw U.S. leadership eroding
"at an accelerating pace" in "political, economic and arguably,
cultural arenas."
The 2025 report will lay out what Fingar called the "dynamics, the
dimensions, the drivers" that will shape the world for the next
administration and beyond. In advance of its completion,
intelligence officials have begun briefing the major presidential
candidates on the security threats that they would be likely to
face in office. Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) received an initial
briefing Sept. 2, with Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) expected to
receive one in the coming days, intelligence officials said.
As described by Fingar, the intelligence community's long-term
outlook has darkened somewhat since the last report in 2004, which
also focused on the impact of globalization but was more upbeat
about its consequences for the United States. The new view is in
line with that of prominent economists and other global thinkers
who have argued that America's influence is shrinking as economic
powerhouses such as China assert themselves on the global stage.
The trend is described in the new book "The Post-American World,"
in which author Fareed Zakaria writes that the shift is not about
the "decline of America, but rather about the rise of everyone
else."
In the new intelligence forecast, it is not just the United States
that loses clout. Fingar predicts plummeting influence for the
United Nations, the World Bank and a host of other international
organizations that have helped maintain political and economic
stability since World War II. It is unclear what new institutions
can fill the void, he said.
In the years ahead, Washington will no longer be in a position to
dictate what new global structures will look like. Nor will any
other country, Fingar said. "There is no nobody in a position . . .
to take the lead and institute the changes that almost certainly
must be made in the international system," he said.
The predicted shift toward a less U.S.-centric world will come at a
time when the planet is facing a growing environmental crisis,
caused largely by climate change, Fingar said. By 2025, droughts,
food shortages and scarcity of fresh water will plague large swaths
of the globe, from northern China to the Horn of Africa.
For poorer countries, climate change "could be the straw that
breaks the camel's back," Fingar said, while the United States will
face "Dust Bowl" conditions in the parched Southwest. He said U.S.
intelligence agencies accepted the consensual scientific view of
global warming, including the conclusion that it is too late to
avert significant disruption over the next two decades. The
conclusions are in line with an intelligence assessment produced
this summer that characterized global warming as a serious security
threat for the coming decades.
Floods and droughts will trigger mass migrations and political
upheaval in many parts of the developing world. But among
industrialized states, declining birthrates will create new
economic stresses as populations become grayer. In China, Japan and
Europe, the ratio of working adults to seniors "begins to approach
one to three," he said.
The United States will fare better than many other industrial
powers, in part because it is relatively more open to immigration.
Newcomers will inject into the U.S. economy a vitality that will be
absent in much of Europe and Japan -- countries that are "on a good
day, highly chauvinistic," he said.
"We are just about alone in terms of the highly developed countries
that will continue to have demographic growth sufficient to ensure
continued economic growth," Fingar said.
Energy security will also become a major issue as India, China and
other countries join the United States in seeking oil, gas and
other sources for electricity. The Chinese get a good portion of
their oil from Iran, as do many U.S. allies in Europe, limiting
U.S. options on Iran. "So the turn-the-spigot-off kind of thing --
even if we could do it -- would be counterproductive."
Nearly absent from Fingar's survey was the topic of terrorism.
Since the last such report, the intelligence community has
projected a declining role for al-Qaeda, which was deemed likely to
become "increasingly decentralized, evolving into an eclectic array
of groups, cells, and individuals." Inspired by al-Qaeda,
"regionally based groups, and individuals labeled simply as
jihadists -- united by a common hatred of moderate regimes and the
West -- are likely to conduct terrorist attacks," the 2004 document
said.
The new assessment saw a continued threat from Iran, however.
Fingar predicted steady progress in the Islamic republic's attempts
to create enriched uranium, the essential fuel used in nuclear
weapons and commercial power reactors. For now, however, there is
no evidence that Iran has resumed work on building a weapon, Fingar
said, echoing last year's landmark National Intelligence Estimate
on Iran, which concluded that warhead-design work had halted in
2003.
He said Iran's ultimate decision on whether to build nuclear
weapons depended on how its leaders viewed their "security
requirement" -- whether they thought their government sufficiently
safe in a region surrounded by traditional enemies.
Iranians are "more scared of their neighbors than many think they
ought to be," Fingar said. But he noted that the United States had
eliminated two of Iran's biggest enemies: Iraq's Saddam Hussein and
the Taliban regime in Afghanistan.
"The United States took care of Iran's principal security threats," he
said, "except for us, which the Iranians consider a mortal threat."

Like the Maori health INDUSTRY. A plethora of academic fat cats, morbidly
obese, ciggie puffing "Maori Cultural Advisers" & haura workers, redundant
bankers, all suddenly making a buck out of Maori, "health". They've made
jobs for themselves created off the backs of sick & disabled hunga haua &
the flax roots mahi done by the Maori Nurse's Council, back in the '80's.
The worst example of the above is the grossly obese Maori Cultural Adviser
@ a major public hospital, who refuses to learn to speak te reo.
http://www.tetaurawhiri.govt.nz/english/issues_e/reo/reo.shtml
Language is central to the cultural identity of both the individual and
the community to which he or she belongs. Not only does a language express
the realities of a particular group, but it also marks one's membership of
that group, both from within (since the language is shared) and without
(since it highlights one's difference).
If a language is lost, the cultural identity of the group is considerably
weakened, which in turn alters the very nature of the society of which
that group is part. In light of this, it may be considered important to
retain and promote the Māori language, in order, amongst other
things, to develop a diverse and harmonious society.
KO TE REO TE HĀ TE MAURI O TE MĀORITANGA. Language is the very
life-breath of being Māori.]

Raed Jarrar,
related to news that "US Announces Withdrawal of 8,00 0 Troops from
Iraq..."
Aloha kakou,
Seeing this article posted by Lynette reminded me of Raed Jarrar's
presentation in Honolulu.
As many of you know, Raed Jarrar was in Hawaii earlier this year and made
eloquent presentations on several islands about the United States'
occupation of Iraq. The Pinky Show captured his presentation and archived
it at their website, here, in a 71 minute video:

As US Announces Withdrawal of 8,000 Troops from Iraq, Leaked US-Iraqi
Draft Agreement Envisions Indefinite Occupation
On the heels of President Bush?s announcement of the withdrawal of 8,000
US troops from Iraq by February of next year, we speak to Iraqi blogger
and political analyst Raed Jarrar. He has translated a recently leaked
draft of an Iraqi-US agreement that outlines the long-term status of US
forces in Iraq. Jarrar says the agreement does not set a deadline for the
withdrawal of non-combat US troops in Iraq. [includes rush transcript]
Guest:
Raed Jarrar, Iraqi blogger, political analyst and architect. he is a
consultant to the American Friends Service Committee?s Iraq program in
Washington, D.C.

AMY GOODMAN: We turn now to the bombing of or the occupation of Iraq.
President Bush announced Tuesday he would withdraw 8,000 troops from Iraq
by February. He also called for a, quote, ?quiet surge? in the number of
US troops in Afghanistan. The President outlined his plan in a speech at
the Naval War College.?
* PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH: [General Petraeus has] just completed a
review of the situation in Iraq, and he and the Joint Chiefs of Staff
have recommended that we move forward with additional force
reductions. And I agree. Over the next several months, we will bring
home about 3,400 combat support forces, including aviation personnel,
explosive ordnance teams, combat and construction engineers, military
police and logistical support forces. By November, we?ll bring home a
Marine battalion that is now serving in Anbar province. And in
February of 2009, another Army combat brigade will come home. This
amounts to about 8,000 additional American troops returning home
without replacement.
AMY GOODMAN: Democratic presidential nominee, Senator Barack Obama,
criticized President Bush for keeping troop levels in Iraq largely
unchanged. Speaking in Ohio on Tuesday, Obama said, ?In the absence of
the timetable to remove our combat brigades we will continue to give
Iraq?s leaders a blank check instead of pressing them to reconcile their
differences.??
But neither Senator Obama nor President Bush made reference to a recently
leaked draft of an Iraqi-US agreement that outlines the long-term status
of US forces in Iraq. Iraqi blogger and political analyst Raed Jarrar has
read and translated the leaked document. He says the agreement doesn?t
set a deadline for the withdrawal of non-combat US troops in Iraq. He
joins us also from Washington, D.C.?
Welcome, Raed. Talk about what you have found, what this leaked document
says that you?ve translated.?
RAED JARRAR: Well, it?s a long document. It has twenty-seven articles.
And most of them are outrageous. They give the US unprecedented
authorities and rights and immunities. Maybe a major point that is
related to this discussion is the fact that the agreement legitimizes or
legalizes these long-term bases, that indefinite number of US troops will
stay there.?
Now, this is a huge issue that is not being discussed in the US enough.
We usually get stuck in discussing troops level, how many troops are the
US going to keep in Iraq, or what?s the mission of these troops. But from
an Iraqi point of view, the majority of Iraqis and the majority of Iraqi
parliamentarians and other representatives of the Iraqi community are
demanding a complete withdrawal that leaves no permanent bases, no troops
and no private contractors. And unfortunately, from this side, from the
US side, both of the ruling parties and both of the mainstream candidates
are planning to leave permanent bases with troops indefinitely.?
AMY GOODMAN: And what about the Iraqi leadership right now? What are they
saying??
RAED JARRAR: Now, the Iraqi leadership in the executive branch, which is
a non-elected branch of the Iraqi government, are allied with the Bush
administration. They are using the same terminology of the Bush
administration. They?re asking for a withdrawal, a partial withdrawal or
withdrawal of what they call ?combat troops,? without really defining
that. And they are OK with leaving permanent bases and US troops in the
long run that have immunity inside and outside the bases.?
Now, the Iraqi leadership in the other branch of the government, the only
elected branch, the parliament, actually is asking for a complete
withdrawal. And these calls do reflect?the calls for a complete
withdrawal do reflect what the majority of Iraqis want. More than
three-fourths of the Iraqi population are asking the US to leave
completely, not leave, you know, half and keep some tens of thousands of
troops behind to do some extra missions.?
AMY GOODMAN: And Barack Obama, does he represent something different,
Raed??
RAED JARRAR: Maybe from a US point of view, there is a difference in
rhetoric. But from an Iraqi point of view, I think both the candidates,
Obama and McCain, are planning to leave troops in the long run. So from
an Iraqi point of view, I don?t think there is a major difference in the
US foreign policy in Iraq between the two candidates, because both of
them are not for ending the intervention in Iraq. Both of them are for
keeping troops in Iraq. They call it residual force; they call it
whatever they want to call it. But they want to continue interfering in
Iraq militarily and politically in the long run.?
And this is something that is completely rejected by Iraqis. Iraqis see
the complete US withdrawal as the first step towards their national
reconciliation and reconstruction, not the same way that some of the
candidates now are trying to use withdrawal as a tool to punish Iraqis
or, you know, make sure that Iraqis are not being lazy or sleeping. I
mean, it?s not that way. Iraqis are fighting politically and in other
ways to end this illegal occupation of their country. And it?s not a gift
that?or not something that we should be bargaining with them. It?s their
right to ask to get their country back. And unless they get their country
back completely, I don?t think Iraq will become a stable place.?
AMY GOODMAN: Nouri al-Maliki, the Iraqi prime minister, has said all US
troops should be out by the end of 2011. How does that fit into this
picture? And what about the latest deal that has been made between, I
think the report was, Shell, the oil company, and the Iraqi government??
RAED JARRAR: Again, what Nouri al-Maliki is saying is that all US combat
troops will leave, but there will be exceptions that will stay in Iraq
indefinitely. Now, this view that Mr. al-Maliki is representing in Iraq
is completely rejected. Iraqis do not support the idea of half-withdrawal
and leaving US troops on the long run. In fact, the full agreement, that
can be viewed on my organization?s website now, on afsc.org, can show you
in details how the US will stay on the long run and who gets to decide
the troops level and the troop tasks. It?s neither the Iraqi nor the US
elected officials.?
Now, a good thing that you bring up the issue of the oil deals, because
we went through a very similar discussion to what we?re discussing now
last year about the oil law. The Bush administration and al-Maliki?s
administration tried to pass an oil law, and then the Iraqi legislative
branch blocked it, the same way that now they are trying to pass this
long-term agreement and the Iraqi parliament is blocking it. And they
ended up losing that battle, because the majority of Iraqis and the
majority of Iraqi parliamentarians rejected the law. There are many
people now??
AMY GOODMAN: We have ten seconds.?
RAED JARRAR: Many people are expecting that the Iraqi parliament will
reject this US long-term agreement, and maybe they will end up finding
other loopholes to pass it.?
AMY GOODMAN: Raed Jarrar, Iraqi blogger, political analyst and architect,
he works with the American Friends Service Committee.

Aloha BokDong, Kyle & HNL PeacePals,
Mahalo to BokDong for making a renewed effort to continue the weekly
Peace Vigils on Friday PM. While I was in HNL, I tried to be there as much
as I could(for most of the past 5-1/2 yrs. since 9-11) and I am proud to
say that there are still a few persevering souls who make the small but
significant effort to make a physical reminder to HNL residents that the
illegal wars of occupation in Iraq, Afghnistan & elsewhere must end. I am
now living on the Big Island, and thanks to Jim Albertini & others, I'm
part of a strong and consistent contingent of 15-20 viglers who are still
standing up for Peace on every Friday PM infront of the old Hilo Federal
Bldg. In fact, tomorrow, on the 7th anniversary of 9-11, we'll be holding
a special Peace Vigil in front of Borders Bookstore on Hwy 11(corner of
Makaala St.) Especially now that the 2 major political parties have
completely ignored the 70% majoority of citizens' plea for pullout of US
invading troops out of the MidEast, we all need to do whatever we can to
jar the largely demoralized & complacent Public out of their comfort zone
and remind them--once more--that the U.S. wars of terror & occupation are
still continuing to surge murderously ahead.
I'd like to offer a suggestion. Maybe I'm bit naive--and I understand
peopl e are very busy with daily demands of every type--but couldn't each
of the dozen or so HNL progressive/Peace groups each commit 2-3 reps to go
to the Friday vigil(each group could rotate their reps, so no one needs to
be committed to every single week's atendance)? That way, each Friday
Peace Vigil would/should have at least 12-20 sign-holders; at least that
would be a more respectable showing rather than just the 4-6 committed
individuals who have been there for the past year or so. Your mana'o and
feedback very welcome. As Gandhi once said, even if it may seem like an
insignificant action, you must still do it...

Aloha Everyone,
It has been nearly 7 years since 9/11 and US invasion / occupation of Iraq
and Afghanistan which has cost untold devestation and destruction upon the
people and their aina (land)...... And, the over 4,000 lives of US service
men and women who went on the orders of the lying Bushit regime!! &nbs p;
For most of every Friday (since 9/11), from 4-6pm, vigileers have come out
to protest US war in Iraq, Afghanistan, and yes, the continued US war
threat towards DPRKorea and military occupation of south Korea.
But, the number of vigileers have dwindled down to less than a handful.
It would be good to see more of you out there especially with the
elections in full swing. Bring a sign, banner, etc. to show your

============
ASPARTAME CAUSES BIRTH DEFECTS AND MENTAL RETARDATION
Aspartame, AKA NutraSweet, Equal, E951 and under numerous other aliases is
an addictive excitoneurotoxic carcinogen masquerading as an additive. The
chemical liberates methyl alcohol, (methanol} the deadliest of the alcohols,
commonly known as wood alcohol. It's so toxic a single ounce can kill or
blind an adult, and it's a cumulative poison that alters the dopamine system
of the brain creating addiction. The methanol, CH4O, loses two hydrogens to
become CH2O, formaldehyde, which is next metabolized to create CH2O2, formic
acid: fire-ant venom. But that's just the beginning.
Half of aspartame is phenylalanine, which floods the brain, a neurotoxin,
lowering the seizure threshold. It depletes serotonin
triggering psychiatric and behavioral problems and interacts with all drugs
and vaccines. Today our children are medicated instead of educated.
Aspartame produces the deadly brain tumor agent diketopiperazine. Such
malignancies now sprout like mushrooms across America. In original studies
it also triggered uterine, ovarian, pancreatic, thyroid and testicular
tumors. The 3-year Italian Ramazzini Study on 1,800 rats confirmed original
FDA findings that this chemical is "a multipotential carcinogen" causing
leukemia, lymphoma, cancer of the kidney and peripheral nerves. Only rats
fed aspartame developed malignant brain tumors. It was peer reviewed by 7
world experts. This excellent research was exceptional in that it did not
kill the rats at the customary 24 months, but allowed them to die naturally.
Cancer is a disease common to the final third of life.
http://www.wnho.net/aspartame_interacts.htm
The Autism Society says, "Autism is a complex developmental disability that
typically appears during the first three years of
life and is the result of a neurological disorder that affects the normal
functioning of the brain.. " There is no warning on aspartame
(NutraSweet/Equal/Spoonful/Canderel, E951, etc.) that it causes birth
defects and mental retardation as Dr. Louis Elsas, pediatric professor,
genetics, testified before Congress on November 3, 1987. The FDA knew all

Pacific Consolidated Industries, LLC, and FDA notified healthcare
professionals of the Class I Recall of the Mobile Oxygen Storage Tank
manufactured and distributed between January - March 2007, because the
device's pressure gauge may rupture and may catch fire as a result of
hydraulic fluid present in the pressure gauge tubing. The mobile oxygen
storage tank is used in military aircraft for treating wounded patients
and in disaster areas to quickly supply oxygen to patients. Facilities
with the Mobile Oxygen Storage Tank should keep the device in quarantine
until arrangements are made to ship the device back to the manufacturer.

AIDS or biowarfare to commit genocide with deniability - AIDS is a
biowarfare weapon that is being used to exterminate Africans and South
East Asians. Here is a snippet fron the defense appropriation committee
hearings of fiscal year 1970. The beauty of using biowarfare agents to
commit genocide is the plausible denial that they engender. Its easier to
cover-up this genocide technology than the trains and gas used to kill the
Jews in Eastern Europe. Its reminicent of how the British and then the
Americans used small pox to exterminate Native Americans. So, History is
having one of its nasty repeats in Africa and South East Asia.

FDA or FDéjà vu? The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced yet
another public meeting on nanotechnology set for September 8, 2008. This
public meeting is a "request for comments" regarding the agency's
oversight of nanomaterials in various products, such as foods, food
additives, animal drugs and feeds, cosmetics, human drugs and biologics,
and medical devices. The public meeting will be held with an eye towards
implementing the FDA Task Force's "guidances" -- which evaluate the
"effects of nanoscale materials on quality, safety, and, where relevant,
effectiveness of products subject to FDA oversight."

Three News Developments on Climate Front - If you've been reading the news
over the past week, you may have come across several stories that illustrate
the impacts of global warming. First, late last week, as Arctic sea ice
continued to melt at near-record levels, scientists spotted nine polar bears
swimming in the open ocean, raising the specter of polar bear drownings.
These bears usually hunt on Arctic ice, but with the ice rapidly
disappearing, polar bears were officially listed as a "threatened species"
this spring. Shortly after that news arrived, we learned that massive new
melting was taking place in Greenland, threatening to disintegrate one of
Greenland's largest glaciers. And now, on the third anniversary of Hurricane
Katrina, yet another devastating storm -- Gustav -- appears to be headed
toward our Gulf Coast. While we can't attribute any individual storm to the
climate crisis, we do know that on the whole, global warming is making such
events more frequent and severe. These events are a clarion call. We must
act boldly and rapidly to limit our use of fossil fuels and reduce the
emissions of heat-trapping gases that are causing this crisis.

Feature Story
FDA Unleashes Mass Irradiation of Spinach, Lettuce and Other Vegetables:
The FDA has announced that beginning today, spinach and lettuce sold
across the United States may now be secretly irradiated before it reaches
grocery store shelves. There is NO requirement that these foods be labeled
with a warning label! The FDA is also looking to expand this to other
vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers and onions. Soon, ALL vegetables may
be irradiated. http://www.naturalnews.com/023945.html
Why does this matter? Because irradiation destroys phytonutrients,
including anti-cancer nutrients that are protecting your health right now.
With this rule, the FDA is literally killing the food supply!
Today's feature story reveals full details about this crime against nature
and the FDA's desperate measures to destroy the national food supply and
sicken Americans.
I've also posted a commercial-free podcast about this FDA plot. Listen to
that here: http://www.naturalnews.com/Index-Podcasts.html#61
This is a crucial issue for the survival of America. No nation can survive
the destruction of its food supply. The FDA is determined to do what all
the terrorists in the world could not: Use weapons of mass destruction
against the food.

First European Privacy Seal Awarded to Search Engine Ixquick
=======
On July 14, 2008, search engine Ixquick was presented with the first
European Union (EU) Privacy Seal by EuroPriSe. The European Privacy Seal
ensures that internet technology (IT) products and services comply with EU
laws and regulations on privacy and data security. The awarding of the
first European Privacy Seal to the meta-search engine Ixquick marks an
important milestone to implement privacy on the World Wide Web and
highlights this privacy-friendly service, said EU Data Protection
Supervisor Peter Hustinx.
Ixquick offers solutions to many of the privacy concerns created by the
internet. Search engines and other websites have been criticized because
searches and visits are routinely recorded and combined into personal and
behavioral profiles. In 2006, Ixquick became the first search engine to
delete information like IP-addresses and eliminate the use of ID cookies.
Unlike Facebook and Google, Ixquick does not reveal personal data of its
users to third parties.
The European Privacy Seal is a simple uniform method to identify whether
an IT product meets the high privacy standards of the EU. The seal is
given to an IT product only after it has been audited to determine if it
meets compliance with European regulations on privacy and data security.
First, legal and IT experts evaluate the product or service. Second, an
accredited certification body cross-checks the evaluation report. Over 120
experts from various EU countries have been trained to provide
evaluations.
The award underlines that a balance between the open nature of the
internet, providers' interests, and the protection of personal data of
internet users is possible said EU Commissioner Vivian Reding.

According to the Associated Press, health care costs are expected to rise
10 percent in 2009. And the incredible thing is that this is considered a
good thing, because between 2000 and 2006 health care premiums rose 86
percent! How are American families supposed to stay healthy or American
businesses stay competitive when health care costs so dramatically outpace
incomes? Eighty-two percent of Americans think that the health care system
needs a "major overhaul" and the reason is obvious. Especially when the #1
cause of bankruptcy in the United States is health care costs. Stop the
spiraling rise in health care costs! »

...wow...what a surprise...how could anyone have possibly seen this coming?

Lingle orders immediate cuts
A hiring freeze and travel limits are among plans with a projected $1
billion budget deficit
STORY SUMMARY >
Gov. Linda Lingle has issued emergency orders for the state to start cutting
spending in light of a looming deficit that could approach $1 billion. But
legislators say the state will have to lay off workers to balance the
budget.
Current projections point to a state budget deficit of more than $900
million by June 2010.
In a recently issued state memo, Lingle said "immediate action must be taken
to control and reduce government expenditures."
State Budget Director Georgina Kawamura was blunt in her own memo, telling
departments that "total resources will be insufficient to meet the level of
expenditures."
Because the state is forbidden by the Hawaii Constitution from running a
deficit, the budget will have to be cut, Kawamura said.
To do that, she told directors, "programs with lower priority should be
identified for possible reduction or elimination."
Rep. Marcus Oshiro, House Finance Committee chairman, said the budget
predictions are so dire, program cuts and layoffs are likely.

The state is facing nearly a $1 billion deficit by July 2010 if the budget
is not cut, according to new projections from state officials.
SHIFT TO RED
According to the state Budget Department, the state budget is going from a
$493.4 million surplus to a $903 million deficit in five years if nothing is
done. Here are the fiscal year numbers:
> 2007: $493.4 million ending balance
> 2008: $331.2 million ending balance
> 2009: $162.3 million ending deficit
> 2010: $584.5 million ending deficit
> 2011: $903 million ending deficit
Georgina Kawamura, state budget director, held a series of closed-door
meetings with House and Senate leaders last week to update them on the new
projections.
Speaker of the House Calvin Say described the budget briefing as "dismal."
State Rep. Marcus Oshiro, House Finance Committee chairman, said the growing
deficit could result in state workers being laid off.
Kawamura declined to comment on the discussions yesterday, but her
department has made public two memos that show the Lingle administration is
getting ready to dramatically redraw the budget.
In an executive memo sent by Gov. Linda Lingle on Aug. 26, the
administration noted that the state Council on Revenues has cut the rate of
growth repeatedly over the past year.
"Given the magnitude of this level of revenue reduction, immediate action
must be taken to control and reduce government expenditures, starting with
(fiscal year 2009)," Lingle wrote.
She said "no new programs should be contemplated because they are not
sustainable in the future."
She added, "Purchases of new equipment, software, comput- ers and vehicles
are strongly discouraged. Travel is limited to essential purposes where
teleconferences are not practical."
Kawamura sent a memo to state departments telling them that the state's
total resources "will be insufficient to meet the level of expenditures
authorized" in the state budget prepared by the Legislature in 2008 and
2009.
"The general fund gap is projected to be over $900 million," Kawamura wrote.
"Under these extraordinary financial circumstances, immediate and
substantial actions are needed to balance the general fund."
Lingle also announced that except for emergencies or court-mandated decrees,
hiring to fill vacancies is frozen.
Besides the hiring freeze, Lingle said all state contracts of more than
$10,000 would have to be approved by her office, and all out-of-state travel
would also need her approval.
Kawamura ordered all department directors to look at the budget increases
that have occurred since 2004, saying that "programs with lower priority
should be identified for possible reduction or elimination."
Even with Lingle's plans to curb spending, Oshiro said, the state is still
in the red.
"There are going to have to be cuts. There are no ifs, ands or buts about
it," Oshiro said.
"There might be some reduction in work force," he added.
"When I say reduction in force, I mean warm bodies. To address this kind of
a shortfall, it will be very difficult to not cut programs and for it to
have an impact on the work force."
Linda Smith, Lingle's senior policy adviser, said the changes in the revenue
projections have resulted in an estimated loss of $2.8 billion in expected
revenue.
"We know we are going to ask the departments to look carefully at every
expenditure," Smith said, adding that she was not present during Kawamura's
briefing.
"In terms of reductions in programs, I think we realize there will have to
be some serious review," Smith said, adding that it was too early to say
whether state programs would have to be cut.
Oshiro said he had been worried about the state's fiscal condition for the
past two years and had asked for alternative spending plans from the state.
"The administration did not cooperate, basically putting a gag order on the
directors," Oshiro said. "I have been criticized by the administration for
not spending. We saw this coming, and we tried to rein in the
administration."
