Re: "gross national happiness index", I've got the feeling it's strictly
a figment of Bhutan tourism industry PR; may be their "branding", like
Hawai`i's "Aloha Spirit"
Last November, the video "Bhutan, Taking the Middle Path to Happiness"
premiered at the Maui Film Festival; on O`ahu at HPU, East-West
Center and UH Spaulding Auditorium; Kaua`i Community College Performing
Arts Center; and the Palace Theatre in Hilo. It was a slick production
with all the government and tourism experts voicing all the "right"
social, governance, economic and environmental buzz terms. Credit goes
to the producers for including interviews with "common" people who knew
nothing about the "gross national happiness index" campaign.
Last December in Geneva we talked with a UN staffer who'd done extended
assignments in Bhutan. She recalled extreme oppression of the masses and
human rights violations galore; also knew nothing about GNH index.
Maybe, if they work the concept hard enough, "gross nation happiness"
will become a reality. Wouldn't that be nice?

Impoverished Bhutan prefers high-end visitors
By Kat Glass
McClatchy-Tribune News Service
WASHINGTON â^À^Ô Bhutan is looking for a few good tourists â^À^Ô
and put the emphasis on "a few," please.
A Buddhist nation squeezed between India and China in the high
Himalayas, its 680,000 residents had no television until 1999.
Smaller than West Virginia, it's got just one cross-country road,
barely a lane and a half wide, that takes two days to drive. And
the government measures the impoverished country's success not by
gross domestic product, but by a "gross national happiness" index.
This exotic developing country would be any world adventurer's
playground. That's if you can spare several thousand dollars for
airfare, lodging, food â^À^Ô and a hefty daily tourism tariff to
top it off.
Bhutan didn't even allow tourists in until 1974.
"That was a time when there were lots of backpackers all over
Asia," said John Sugnet, spokesman for Geographic Expeditions, a
San Francisco-based tour operator that organizes trips to Bhutan.
"They (the Bhutanese government) made a very conscious decision
that they didn't want low-end tourism; they only wanted high-end
tourism."
Keeping the riffraff out is still a national goal.
"Our tourism policy is driven by a policy of high quality, low
volume," said Doma Tshering, a deputy permanent representative to
the United Nations from Bhutan.
Tshering was on hand with more than 100 other Bhutanese
representatives at the Smithsonian Institution's annual Folklife
Festival last week in Washington.
In front of their hospitality tent, a map of the country had a
message scrawled on it: "HOW DO I GET TO BHUTAN? PLZ ASK US!"
But that welcome isn't always wholehearted.
Damcho Rinzin, a researcher for the government's Tourism Council of
Bhutan, watched as curious visitors wandered into the tent. "We're
being invaded now," he joked.
Ideally, there's a balance, Rinzin said: "As much as we want to
preserve our culture and traditions, we also want to share our
culture."
Visitors must pay at least $200 to a tour operator for each day's
stay, and some of the country's 80 or so hotels add a surcharge.
The government pockets more than a third of the $200 as a tourism
tax.
Bhutan saw more than 20,000 tourists in 2007, Rinzin said.
"If we feel that there are too many tourists coming in, we may
increase the pricing policy," he said.
Next year, that daily price â^À^Ô which has remained stable for
several years â^À^Ô will go up to $250, Rinzin said.
Then there's the airfare. Roundtrip flights from Bangkok on Druk
Air, the single, government-sponsored airline, can run to about
$800. (A roundtrip flight from the United States to Bangkok is
about $2,000.)
And you can't just book a flight on Expedia or pick up your visa at
the nearest embassy.
Bhutan requires that all of those arrangements be made through a
professional tour operator such as Geographic Expeditions.
Bethesda, Md., native Eleanor Zartman was visiting the hospitality
stand at the Folklife Festival last week and getting excited about
her scheduled October trip to Bhutan.
Zartman, 72, an avid traveler, booked her trip with Waterbury,
Vt.-based Country Walkers.
"You know it's not costing $4,000 to put us in tents and
monasteries and give us yak tea," Zartman said.
Planning the trip â^À^Ô even with the aid of the agency â^À^Ô was
difficult, and Zartman is dreading the three days of international
airport hopping at either end of her Bhutan visit.
But she's what the country is looking for.
"They're more well-traveled people," Rinzin said. "They'll have
genuine concern for the culture and the life of the people."

HPV Vaccine Victims Pile Up: $1.5B for Merck
While Merck has pulled in $1.5B from sales of GARDASIL vaccine worldwide,
there are continuing reports that girls are being crippled and dying after
getting the HPV vaccine fast tracked and licensed by the FDA in 2006.
Although the roll-out of GARDASIL with an unparalleled multi-million dollar
mass media advertising blitz has created a profitable market for the drug
company that took huge losses from Vioxx injury/death lawsuits, the
persistent reports of Guillain Barre Syndrome (GBS) paralysis, arthritis,
seizures and sudden loss of consciousness within 24 hours of vaccination
continue to haunt the marketing campaign.
A search of the VAERS database, which includes reaction reports through
April 30, 2008 released to the public by the FDA, reveals nearly 6,700
reports of injury and death after GARDASIL.

Research Shows Disinfectant Wipes Spread Superbugs in Hospitals
by Sherry Baker
(NaturalNews) First came word that popular antibacterial hand soaps are
not only unnecessary (old fashioned soap and water is the best way to
keep germs from spreading) but the chemicals in them can harm your health
and environment. Now a new study says instead of killing potentially
dangerous infections, disinfectant wipes may actually spread
drug-resistant and sometimes deadly bacteria.
The research, recently presented at the American Society of
Microbiology's General Meeting in Boston, zeroed in on bacteria that
included the dreaded "superbugs" -- methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus
aureus, or MRSA. MRSA infections range from so-called "flesh eating"
disfiguring skin infections to life-threatening and difficult to treat
infections of the bloodstream, lungs and surgical wounds. The majority of
cases are associated with hospitals, nursing homes or other health care
facilities ñ- exactly the places where wipes are frequently used to try
to prevent infections.
In a statement to the press, Gareth Williams, a microbiologist at Cardiff
University, said the wipes, which are routinely used in hospitals, killed
some bacteria. However, the study of intensive care units at two Welsh
hospitals showed they not only didn't do a thorough job but the wipes had
a high risk of carrying the so-called superbugs to other surfaces. The
researchers found that instead of using a wipe only once on one surface,
hospital workers routinely tend to clean several surfaces near patients,
such as vital sign monitors, tables and bed wiping with a single wipe and
that can move the infectious bacteria around rather than destroying them.
Previous research has shown that patients are at risk at many hospitals
due to poor hygiene practices spreading dangerous bacteria. Despite their
training, many health care workers, including doctors and nurses, often
fail to even wash their hands between patients, according to several
studies.
While the new study covered bacteria in hospitals, the information is
also pertinent to the use of wipes in the home. You can't assume that by
wiping down a cutting board, sink and counter top with a so-called
disinfectant wipe that you have killed all potentially dangerous bacteria
especially that associated with raw eggs and meat.
The best line of defense against infection? Wash your hands and surfaces
with hot water and soap. Natural soaps and detergents with no added
antibacterial agents zap the numbers of potentially troublesome bacteria
adequately and quickly; old-fashioned cleaning aids such as bleach,
alcohol, ammonia, and hydrogen peroxide can be used, too.
They won't leave behind long-lasting antibacterial chemical residues
which can continue to kill some benign bacteria and increase the risk
that resistant strains will grow on surfaces. The CDC points out that
only a few years ago, a few dozen products containing antibacterial
agents were being marketed for the home whereas today there are over 700
that are available including cleansers, soaps, toothbrushes, dishwashing
detergents, and hand lotions, all containing antibacterial agents. And,
like antibiotics, antibacterial chemicals in wipes and other household
products may kill off susceptible but harmless bacteria but promote the
growth of resistant strains.

Subject: Home work starts atop graves
Home work starts atop graves
By Tom Finnegan
tfinnegan@starbulletin.com
LIHUE >> After declaring victory last month, protesters trying to
preserve a Hawaiian cemetery were blindsided when construction began
yesterday at a home site in Haena.
[IMAGE]After threatening the contractor and landowner Joseph Brescia with
arrest for the alleged desecration of the 30 graves on the site last
month, Kauai Police Chief Darryl Perry said yesterday that the permits
obtained by Brescia, however misguided, keep workers or the landowner
from being charged with any crime.
Police said construction started yesterday, with the clearing of the lot
and the erecting of silt fences at the site, which sits on Naue Point,
just off Alealea Road. Protesters said there was also a cement pour over
some of the graves.
The chief's decision was a betrayal, said Kaiulani Edens-Huff, who has
camped near the site for months to protect the graves of her ancestors.
She was not on site yesterday, as she was supposed to meet Perry in Lihue
around the same time that construction began.
"Nobody ... told us the deal was off," Edens-Huff said yesterday. "Police
are taught not to believe in coincidences, and neither do I."
"Yesterday's quiet beginning, in which only one person videotaped the
construction, was in contrast to last month's planned protest, when about
75 people were on the site, ready to protect the graves with force.
At the time, Perry threatened the contractors with arrest.
The "clarification" yesterday came after meetings with the county
attorney and the attorney general's office.
The Department of Land and Natural Resources and the Kauai Island Burial
Council have the right to define what is desecration, Perry said.
"Does putting a cement slab on burial sites constitute desecration?" he
asked. "No, not according to the DLNR on the recommendation of the Burial
Council."
"Brescia, who bought the land from movie star Sylvester Stallone in 2001,
has jumped through numerous legal hoops in the past few years to build on
the site.
In 2003 his shoreline certification was challenged, and later the case of
his setback from that shoreline was reversed by the state Supreme Court.
Brescia finally received approval to build his home in April, despite
protests from native Hawaiians who said the land was a cemetery and
should be left alone.
Edens-Huff said yesterday that she intends to file legal challenges and
that plans she has seen do not include septic tanks.
"I'm disappointed but I'm not done yet," she added.
Perry said yesterday that he expects more protests, but police officials
said they were taking no special precautions to protect the site.
Perry also said he hopes it is not the end of the discussion.
"I hope that somewhere down the line, a leader of great vision will ...
correct the unconscionable decisions by some of our appointed public
officials who authorized/permitted the building of this home, and future
homes under similar circumstances," he wrote.

Subject: MAHALO!!! DU 101
Aloha Council Members,
Wow! I can't thank you enough for your vote on the DU reso! You Rock!!!
Sorry it took so long to thank you, I had to wait and make sure I wasn't
dreaming!
Residents just want to know what is really going on at Pohakuloa and they
don't think that is too much to ask. I know there are a few people out
there who say this is not your jurisdiction so just forgetaboutit, but we
can't just forget about it, we need to know the truth; this is our home
and you ARE responsible for what goes on here. Thank you so much for
taking your responsibility seriously.
I have gotten tons of emails in the past few days and believe me, your
'political credits' and credibility has gone through the roof amongst
many, many of your neighbors.
I have read of some similar resolutions in councils across the country,
but none like ours. I am so proud that Hawaii County is the first to do
something like this. Even though this is just a reso, a few lawyers have
said that the World Court at the Hague, Netherlands, has accepted resos
before and people are checking into it.
Again, I am so proud of you all for looking out for residents best
interests, even you, Pete. I know you would have voted for it but for the
fact of feeling you were leaving your troops in the lurch. I am more
worried about what those kids are breathing while they train. (and they
are still supposed to have the hours in regardless of where they train) I
am afraid it may be our own government who are leaving our soldiers 'in
the lurch', just like they HAVE done in the past with agent orange,
nuclear weapons testing, vaccines, lack of equipment, etc., etc.
It is fact, 400,000 Americans are getting disability checks from nuclear
radiation poisoning by our own government. I have read "Between 2 million
and 4 million American soldiers and Vietnamese residents were sprayed with
Agent Orange and other defoliants." I don't know how many are dead or on
disability because of it but I do know tons of our soldiers are sick or
dead by our own hand. Henry Kissinger said, "military men are dumb, stupid
animals to be used as pawns." This statement makes me furious as I'm sure
it does you; these are our kids he's talking about! By voting for this
reso you have done a small part to protect not only Hawaii Island
residents, but our own soldiers, as well.
I know as council members, this is seemingly out of your realm, but as
residents of this island and planet YOU and all of us, are responsible to
find out the truth about depleted uranium on our mountain. Maybe we will
be saving our troops, too. Not to mention countless innocents around the
world.
Thank you SO much! Keep it up the good work because there is still so
much work to be done! Shannon Rudolph -Kona

Subject: [edliberation] Network Announcement--New Social Justice Teacher's
Plan Book!
Planning to Change the World: A Plan Book for Social Justice Teachers is
ready to order!
Hello Network Members,
As you may recall, the Education for Liberation Network is working in
partnership with the New York Collective of Radical Educators (NYCoRE) to
create a social justice teacher's plan book for the 2008-2009 school year.
Great news! The content for the planner is finished and we have launched
the planner website: www.justiceplanbook.com, where you can see sample
pages and pre-order a copy. From now until August 1, when the book will be
published, you can pre-order your copy for a discount price--$14 plus
shipping and handling.
Called, Planning to Change the World: A Plan Book for Social Justice
Teachers, it's just like a regular lesson plan book with space for writing
daily lesson plans, long range planning, student contact information etc.
But in addition it is packed with resources and tips to help teachers
integrate ideas of social justice into their classrooms. Thanks to all
those who contributed suggestions for this unique resource.
All proceeds from the sale of this plan book go to the network and NYCoRE.
We are trying to get it into the hands of as many teachers, teacher
educators and student teachers as possible before the start of the school
year. I will be sending you an eflier for Planning to Change the World in
a separate email. Please forward it widely.
We need your help to make this effort a success. There are so many ways
you can help, and I hope many of you will get involved. Here are some
suggestions:
* Buy a copy for yourself or as a gift for a friend.
* Forward the eflier to teachers, principals, teaching artists, teacher
educators or anyone else you know who might be interested.
* Encourage principals to purchase them for their faculty members.
* Add a link to the plan book website to your website or blog. Please
email me at tara@edliberation.org for a graphic link.
* Teachers: Put fliers in colleagues' boxes if you are working summer
school. We will be emailing everyone a flier you can copy later this
week.
* Teacher educators: Add Planning to Change the World to your syllabus
as required reading. Ask colleagues to do the same. For more
information about how your university/college bookstore can order
this book for your class, please email me at tara@edliberation.org.
* Attending or tabling at a conference? Perhaps you'd be willing to
sell copies on our behalf. Again, you can email me at
tara@edliberation.org for more information.
* Talk to educational organizations, union caucuses, teacher ed
programs etc. about purchasing copies for their members.
* Make yourself a friend to the planner Facebook site (coming soon!)
* Talk to your local teacher supply store about carrying the planner.
Questions, comments or other ideas about distributing this book, please
email me.
Thanks so much!

Aspartame is genetically engineered
Monsanto, the chemical manufacturer turned agricultural giant, is indeed
gaining control over the world's population, one seed at a time.
Marie-Monique Robin's documentary "The World According to Monsanto" tells
the whole story. It was actually aired on French television earlier this
year, but if you live in the United States don't expect this eye-opening
expose to hit the mainstream press.
http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2008/05/01/this-company-may-be-the-biggest-threat-to-your-future-health.aspx?source=nl
Aspartame can precipitate diabetes, simulates and aggravates diabetic
retinopathy and neuropathy, destroys the optic nerve, causes diabetics to go
into convulsions and even interacts with insulin. The free methyl alcohol is
causing diabetics to lose their limbs. It also converts to formaldehyde and
formic acid in the retina of the eye, and it triggers optic neuritis,
macular degeneration, retinal detachments and even blindness. (Aspartame
Disease: An Ignored Epidemic by diabetic specialist, H. J. Roberts, M.D.,
http://www.sunsentpress.com ). Here is a letter also that goes into detail
how aspartame destroys the health of diabetics. Please make sure your
physician has a copy of this letter and the reports mentioned.

I. OPENING REMARKS
Meeting called to order at 9:41 AM.
Pule offered by La France Kapaka-Arboleda (La France).
II. APPROVAL OF JUNE 12, 2002, MEETING MINUTES
No minutes presented.[huh?] June minutes will be presented at October
meeting for council approval.
III. BUSINESS
A. BOTHMAN PROPERTY; TMK: 5-3-003:014; KALIHIWAI, HANALEI
Information/Recommendation: Case update; descendancy issues.
Kai Markell (Markell) thanks Mrs. Yvette Bothman for coming to the meeting
from California. Markell explains the role and focus of the Burial Sites
Program. Some people had referred to the Bothman property as a cemetery.
Markell recounts the events in regard to the Bothman property. The
Kaua`i/Ni`ihau Burial Council approved the removal of 6 burials
previously. Subsequently, two of the burials were found to be only one
burial, therefore five burials were approved for disinterment. One
individual was recovered, then as the second burial was recovered, three
more burials were discovered. The archaeological crew recovered the three
new burials and discovered another burial, which was also recovered. While
the last burial was being recovered, a coffin burial was encountered with
a woman (small stature adult) with a child on her chest. One of the
criteria for preserving burials in place, in the law, is a concentration
of burials. My responsibility is to honor the wishes of those who laid
these people to rest under possible tragic conditions, such as losing a
wife and child at the same time. It is natural to want to relocate burials
to make use of the property, but to show aloha for these people, I cannot
second guess the intentions of the person that buried these people here. I
cannot allow the removal of some burials, knowing there are more to be
found. That becomes a problem because we end up separating people. I
wouldn't want you to have a house there that you would not be comfortable
living in. We are not interested in condemning property, but we need to
consider our options.
Ben Welborn (Welborn) of Landmark Consulting says that it is required that
the house be built on stilts approximately 12' above ground. A pad is not
necessary.
Markell says he has a bad feeling about the burials that have already been
removed. He also feels bad about the adult and child burial.
La France clarifies that the council approved the relocation of 6 burials
(actually 5). How many of those 6 have been taken out?
Joe Kennedy (Kennedy) answers that as of today, 6 individuals are out, 5
are remaining. Four of the 6 that have been removed are inadvertent
discoveries. So the answer to La France's question is 2. Of the 5 that are
remaining, 3 are previously identified.
Markell explains that the first two burials removed were previously
identified. Therefore, there are 3 more previously identified burials
still in place.
Kennedy explains that when the second individual was removed, that
individual turned into multiple individuals buried at one time. Kennedy
considers them a unit, "almost literally holding hands." We made a
decision, which I take responsibility for, that determined that the
burials were a single unit.
La France makes it clear that the council previously approved the removal
of 5 burials, of which, 2 have come out. If you want to count the 3
inadvertent burials that have been removed as the 3 previously identified,
that is Markell's decision. The council does not deal with inadvertent
burials. We can only recommend, not make decisions at this point.
Markell agrees that the council's process is finished, it was to relocate
what turned out to be 5 individuals. Now the department is dealing with 6
more burials with the possibility of finding more. That is why the dept.
is coming back to the council for advice on how to handle the new burials
and more possibly in the future.
Yvette Bothman (Bothman) asks that since the burials were "holding hands,"
wasn't it better to take them all out and not just one, so they remain
together.
Markell says that technically the way the law is written is that when you
remove one burial and find 4 more then that is classified as a
concentration. A concentration is any area that has more then one burial.
That has high preservation value.
Nancy McMahon (McMahon), Kaua`i archaeologist, presents background
information to the Bothman property. Mr. and Mrs. Bothman hired Ben
Welborn to be their consultant to apply for a CUA application. I told them
that they would have to do an inventory survey, which they did. The minute
they hit the burials, they withdrew the application. To get an idea of the
amount of estimated excavation, how many footings for the house will be
dug and how large will the leachfield be?
Welborn answers that there are 23 footings currently designed.
McMahon says she recommended Kennedy to test where the footings would be
placed.
Welborn says that a structural engineer may recommend sub-grade structure
which ties in to the footings to protect the house's integrity from tidal
waves.
John Kruse (Kruse) asks if house will be similar to Zimmerman house.
Welborn recommends a way to build with fewer footings which would impact
the land less. The leachfield would be toward the front left hand corner
of the property, but is not set in stone.
Kennedy explains that inadvertents are found on many properties. In this
case, Kennedy says they were comprehensive in distribution of test units.
Kennedy switched from mechanical excavation to hand excavation when three
burials were discovered. The other two previously identified burials were
found during shovel test units.
Bothman says her family plans to live full time on the property within the
next 5 years. Bothman reads a prepared statement about herself and how she
plans to care for the iwi. Keeping the iwi together in a protected,
respected and properly cared for area is most important to her and her
family. This property needs the voices of laughter, love and life again.
Markell is concerned about the extent of the concentration and if the
reason the burials need to be moved is so somebody can build a house.
Markell urges flexibility with designing the house. Given the
concentration, Markell considers this to be a cemetery. The way the
burials were found stacked on top of one another is cause for concern. So
we like to know what is there before we make a decision. I have my own
cultural beliefs and this project has been bothering me.
Bothman says the original plan should be followed to relocate all of the
burials so that they all stay together in a protected place regardless of
how many are encountered.
Kennedy says that sterile sand was found under the three burials that were
removed. Kennedy says that they went beyond and exceeded the regular
amount of testing required. Nobody knows the full extent of the burials,
but we have put in a lot of work to reduce the chance that many burials
will be encountered. If iwi is found, they can be moved to a safe,
protected place on the property, close to their original interment site.
La France says this case is unique in that the property is very small with
predetermined setbacks, which limits the building options. A house for a
family of six would require a larger leachfield. La France clarifies for
Bothman that the council can only recommend to the burial program what to
do about inadvertent burials. The council can only make decisions on
previously identified burials.
McMahon discusses other cases on Kaua`i in which some burials were removed
and some left in place. The council tends to prefer relocate burials that
have already been disturbed or will likely be exposed again.
La France clarifies that the four inadvertents that have been removed
already can not replace the three previously identified individuals slated
to be removed.
Markell says that they are looking to the council on a decision for six
individuals.
Welborn asks for a decision on future inadvertent discoveries.
Markell clarifies that four inadvertents were taken out, then an adult
with the child were found and were about to be removed, but staff from the
burial program stopped the archaeological crew from disinterring the adult
and child. Markell asks Kennedy to open the area up more to determine how
many more burials are in the area.
It is moved that council stand by its previous decision that the six, now
identified as five, relocations. Anything besides that decision is
recommended that the department be responsible for. (Santos/Kamai).
VOTE: ALL IN FAVOR.
La France explains that the council has narrowed the net which should
make the process for the Bothmans easier.
Welborn explains council decision to Yvette Bothman. The council has
removed itself from future decisions and it is now in the hands of the
state which is Kai Markell and Kana`i Kapeliela.
B. SAND AND WEED REALTY TRUST; TMK: 5-8-010:014; HA`ENA, WAINIHA, HANALEI
Information/Recommendation/Determination: Recognition of descendants,
testimony from descendants regarding burial treatment; formal council
determination to either preserve in place or relocate affected burials on
subject property.
Kennedy says that the clients have informed Kennedy and Welborn to inform
the council that they don't want to move any of the burials. This will
entail modification to Kennedy's burial treatment plan.
La France tells Kennedy to work with the Kauai archaeologist, Nancy
McMahon on the burial treatment plan.
Welborn says that because a formal decision hasn't yet been made, they can
retract their previous proposal. Welborn advised the client to leave the
burial in place and the client agreed.
La France accepts Joe Kennedy's verbal declaration that Item B. Sand and
Weed Realty Trust has withdrawn their application to relocate.
Markell says the 45 day time period will begin when the department
receives the amended plan.
La France says that when it is on the agenda again, the council can add
conditions to the withdrawal such as: to put the coordinates registering
the locations on a map; and to assign site numbers.
Kapeliela says that Aunty Betty Snowden sent same information that she
sent previously. Kapeliela says that since he is the genealogist for the
program, he explains to the council how important descendency issues are
and the definition of cultural descendency. Cultural descendency can be
claimed by a person descending from someone that used to live in that
ahupua`a in which the burials in question lie, or their ancestors are
buried in the same ahupua`a, which the burials in question lie. Betty
Snowden is claiming descendency because her ancestor Mariam Kekauonohi was
awarded 69 lands during the Mahele including the one in question. Did she
live in all these lands? Therefore the descendency issue is at a stand
still right now because Kapeliela has to have documentation that
Kekauonohi actually lived on the ahupua`a of the Sand and Weed Realty
Trust, and not just a land owner. This is relevant to many cases.
Markell explains that "cultural descendency" is becoming weaker and
weaker. We are trying to amend our rules. We are being sued by cultural
descendants in court.
La France thinks it is a good move because people are claiming cultural
descendency for the wrong reasons. It also diminishes a true family's
claim.
Markell says the department is amending the rules and the council may have
claims come in the meantime, but give them the weight they deserve on a
case by case basis.
C. GUSHER CASE; TMK: 5-9-002:034; HA`ENA, HANALEI
Information/Recommendation: Status update, recent Board of Land and
Natural Resources ruling.
McMahon says she went to the Land Board meeting in August and we brought
the C & D to them. Gusher came to the hearing represented by Bays Dever,
the attorney Bruce Vass, and the property manager Meryl Isam. They hired
Bays Dever the day before the hearing which did not make the Land Board
happy. The Land Board increased the fine for the pumphouse and Jacuzzi to
almost $10,000. The Land Board also concurred with our recommendation to
remove the pumphouse and Jacuzzi in the presence of an archaeological
monitor. We talked about hiring SCS. They have 60 days since the end of
August to start the process and pay the fine. Don Hibbard is supposed to
take the burials to the AG (attorney general) for fining on the 6E-43.6
violation which is removing burials without our consent. The property
owner representatives agreed to pay the fine and to find a relocation
place.
D. CASE UPDATES AND INADVERTENT DISCOVERIES
Information/Recommendation: Discussion of recent inadvertent discoveries
and other staff updates regarding ongoing cases which include but are not
limited to cases such as Amio Road Inadvertents, Lumaha`i, Princeville
Corporation, DOT Inadvertents, Anahola (DHHL), Kealia Burial Preserve
(County of Kaua`i), Kapa`a land Transfer and other land transfers in other
districts.
Amio Road: McMahon says Amio Road has been happening at Kukuiula Bay. It
is the old Baldwin House, which was destroyed by Hurricane Iniki and sold
to Mr. Richie. Richie lives in Koloa area and he is building a house
there. They are removing all the sand to expose the bedrock to bolt the
house to. There is a lot of excavation. We are at 4 possible burials, all
fragmented, likely previously disturbed by old sewer lines. They are
screening the sand and monitoring. They also found WWII bunkers under the
old Baldwin house.
Reinterment Land: McMahon says the Land Management Department has remnant
pieces of land available for reinterment. DOT drafted a letter in our
support.
La France says that in the process an alliance will be formed shortly made
up of all entities like County of Kaua`i Public Works, the Department of
Water and the Public Works Sewer Division and anybody that is going into
roadways. This should ease the work for everybody. This is not for private
land people. It is for the burials that are found during projects that
benefit the general public.
Kapa`a Land Transfer: Kapeliela says they have to figure out the delicate
wording because the Dept. of Health (DOH) is looking at it as a cemetery.
Markell says that DOH doesn't understand that DLNR is exempt. We are not
creating a cemetery.
Princeville Corporation and Anahola (DHHL): Kapeliela says that Don
Hibbard has letters for Princeville for DHHL Anahola ready to be signed.
La France says that she gets compliments from golfers for the council and
the regal burial site on the golf course that gives the burials a place of
honor.
IV. ANNOUNCEMENTS
"Gladys": Grace Kamai (Kamai) says that "Gladys", the human skeleton that
has been in the science room at Waimea High School, still hasn't been
reinterred. We have a place to put Gladys, we have her and will reinter
her. She is an Indian woman brought over from India from the Ganges River,
used for study. Markell has another child skeleton from the same area also
used for study. Markell would like to put these two burials together. La
France asks Markell to bring the child skeleton to Kauai for reburial.

Subject: NaturalNews report: Hidden dangerous ingredients in your groceries
NaturalNews Insider Alert (www.NaturalNews.com)
Online reports / book announcements
Dear readers,
Do you know which seven dangerous food ingredients to watch out for in
your groceries? These are the "deadly seven," as I call them, and they
can directly promote heart disease, migraines, obesity, outrageous food
cravings, osteoporosis, diabetes and even birth defects.
The top three most dangerous ingredients I've found in my research are:
1) Sodium nitrite -- causes cancer, found in processed meats like hot
dogs, bacon, sausage. Used to make meats appear red (a color fixer
chemical).
2) Hydrogenated oils -- causes heart disease, nutritional deficiencies,
general deterioration of cellular health, and much more. Found in
cookies, crackers, margarine and many "manufactured" foods. Used to make
oils stay in the food, extending shelf life. Sometimes also called
"plastic fat."
3) Excitotoxins -- aspartame, monosodium glutamate and others (see
below). These neurotoxic chemical additives directly harm nerve cells,
over-exciting them to the point of cell death, according to Dr. Russell
Blaylock. They're found in diet soda, canned soup, salad dressing,
breakfast sausage and even many manufactured vegetarian foods. They're
used to add flavor to over-processed, boring foods that have had the life
cooked out of them.
Want to know more about the genuine dangers posed by toxic food
ingredients and additives? I'll share more with you in this email, but
first let me invite you to check out the tell-all book I've written on
the subject: "Grocery Warning."
Grocery Warning exposes the truth that food companies will never admit to
and the mainstream media will never print (because they receive
advertising funds from food companies, of course!).
http://www.truthpublishing.com/GroceryWarning.html
It reveals, in shocking detail, exactly which ingredients compromise your
health (and how they do it). Based on thousands of hours of research, and
quotations from the top doctors, authors and nutritionists, Grocery
Warning tells you the truth about foods and groceries that will empower
you with life-changing information.
Did you know, for example, that:
* Feeding children hot dogs increases their risk of brain cancer by
300%?
* Strawberry yogurt, fruit punch and other red-looking grocery products
are often colored with dead, ground-up cochineal beetles? The
ingredient is called "carmine," and it's made from insects. It's
listed right on the label of many of your favorite foods.
* Food companies now "hide" MSG in safe-sounding ingredients like yeast
extract or torula yeast?
* Many Florida oranges are actually dipped in an artificial orange dye
in order to make them more visually appealing? It's the same dye
that's been banned for use in foods because of cancer risk.
* Girl Scout cookies are still made with hydrogenated oils that contain
trans fatty acids?
* Many so-called "healthy" or vegetarian foods also contain the very
same offending ingredients as conventional groceries?
* Eating just one serving of processed meats each day increases your
risk of pancreatic cancer by 67%?
* One artificial color additive causes behavioral disorders in
children? And that 80% of children diagnosed with ADHD can be
outright cured of the condition in two weeks by avoiding certain
ingredients?
* The #1 ingredient in Slim Fast meal replacement shake (powder form)
is sugar?
* Some guacamole dips don't even contain avocado? Instead, they're made
with hydrogenated soybean oil and artificial colors.
Everything I'm sharing here is absolutely true. It's all quite shocking,
yes, but this is information you need to know if you want to feed
yourself -- and your family -- foods that actually promote health instead
of disease.
Check out the Grocery Warning System, complete with my book, audio bonus
CD, reference charts, research compendium and more:

The truth about metabolic disruptors
Nearly all modern diseases are caused by what I call "metabolic
disruptors." These are common ingredients, such as white flour and sugar,
that prevent your body from healing. Unfortunately, metabolic disruptors
are used in almost all commercially prepared foods, which means most
products on your grocer's shelves contribute to poor health. But if you
know what to look for, you can fill your cart with foods that will help
you live a longer more vibrant life.
That's why I created the Grocery Warning System. This system will give you
the information you need to make the healthiest shopping choices at the
grocery store. You'll learn which ingredients have been linked to disease,
as well as important nutrients that have been shown to prevent and reverse
cancer, heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and other degenerative diseases.
Here's what else you'll find in Grocery Warning:
* Which common ingredient has been shown to ravage the cardiovascular
system and promote heart disease while destroying brain cells.
* Why some popular beverages have been linked to blindness and
seizures, dementia, Alzheimer's and behavioral disorders.
* How a single food ingredient is killing more than 30,000 Americans
each year and yet remains perfectly legal due to food industry
politics and influence on federal regulators.
* How food manufacturers alter natural fats and convert them into
disease-promoting ingredients that ravage your health and make it
virtually impossible to lose weight, no matter what you eat!
* The one natural, alternative sweetener that has no calories, no blood
sugar effects, no chemical toxicity, and tastes great!
* What "homogenized" means on milk products and the shocking truth of
how this artificial alteration of dairy fats poses a very real threat
to your health.
* How to reverse osteoporosis and other bone disorders through dietary
and lifestyle changes that create high-density bones throughout your
body.
* The truth behind the margarine scam and how the food industry
convinced an entire nation to eat disease-promoting margarine for
decades, based on shoddy scientific evidence and political influence.
* The one natural oil that's lacking from the diets of virtually all
Americans, but can significantly improve brain function.
* Why at least one prominent doctor is accusing the FDA of committing
crimes against humanity for not protecting the public from the
immediate health dangers posed by three different ingredients found
in virtually every grocery store.

Back to the "hidden" ingredients
So how do food companies manage to hide excitotoxins and taste additives
to their foods? It's easy: They just keep changing the words to confuse
consumers. Once customers learned to avoid MSG / monosodium glutamate, the
food companies started using yeast extract.
And now, two years after I started sounding the alarm on yeast extract,
many companies have switched to "torula yeast," which accomplishes the
same thing. Other hidden sources of MSG include:
^Õ Autolyzed vegetable protein
^Õ Hydrolyzed vegetable protein
^Õ Calcium caseinate
^Õ Sodium caseinate
^Õ Textured protein
The ingredients "stacking" trick
Food companies also use the ingredients stacking trick to intentionally
leave you with the wrong impression about what's really in their food
products.
For example, one company makes a nutrition bar that's absolutely loaded
with sugar, but they way they've arranged the ingredients prevents sugar
from appearing as the #1 ingredient. Instead, the first ingredient is
rice. But looking down the label, you'll find all the following forms of
sugar, all in the same nutrition bar:
^Õ Sugar
^Õ Sucrose
^Õ High-fructose corn syrup
^Õ Corn syrup solids
^Õ Dextrose
Add all these up, and the #1 component in the bar is, indeed, sugar (or
sugary substances). But the manufacturer has used ingredients stacking to
make you think the top ingredient is actually rice.
It's a clever, dishonest technique used by food companies to lie with
food labels.
Remember, the longer the ingredients label, the less healthy the food.
Read those ingredients lists before buying foods, and if you discover
chemical names that you can't pronounce, don't buy the food!
